Sideways ribbons = subliminable message ?
There have been many ribbon campaigns and many continue - red, pink, black, yellow. Most of these were ribbons you could pin to your lapel to raise awareness for a certain cause. These ribbons are always pinned in a vertical orientation.

I notice when yellow ribbon stickers are placed on cars, they seem to more frequently be placed in a horizontal orientation.

It could be that the writing on the ribbon prompts people to put the ribbon in this position; it could also be lack of space to put it the other way. But it struck me that placing the ribbon in this orientation makes the shape look even more like this common bumper item:

Is this just a coincidence?

2. It's the Text on the Ribbon
Some people are stupid to what yellow ribbons mean when you start seeein g them every where. Everyone I have seen puts them on it such a fashion that the text, "Support the Troops" is almost always horizontal. If it were verticle, people would go, "What's that mean?" and tilt thier head.

6. Tie a yellow ribbon - Tony Orlando & Dawn 1973 hit
Edited on Mon Feb-28-05 11:22 AM by merh
was written by Irwin Levine and Larry Brown. It is based on the true story of a convict retuning from jail.

I'm comin'; home, I've done my time
Well I've got to know what is and isn't mine
If you received my letter
Tellin' you I'd soon be free
Then you'd know just what to do
If you still want me
If you still want me

Oh, tie a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree
It's been three long years
Do you still want me
If I don't see a ribbon round the old oak tree
I'll stay on the bus
Forget about us
And put the blame on me
If I don't see a yellow ribbon
Round the old oak tree

9. I never did like that song.
I like it less today. I would not be suprised if there were a relationship between the fish and the ribbon. I see plenty of them on mini-vans along side the little fishie emblem.

They are marketing to church people. Not a bad idea. Church folk have a profound herd instinct. Like the bison, they have been known to stampeed over cliffs. One ribbon shows up in a church parking lot, next week every mini-van has one.

10. The herd of bison over the cliff is a good comparision...
or Jim Jones and his "kool aid" party. I can't stand that song either.

The hostages were held in Iran longer than they should have thanks to poppy's deal he made so St. Raygun could win the election. During that time they "popularized" the yellow ribbon concept and ever since they have been perpetuating their lies and myths.

11. Sorry, but I remain convinced
that "smart fundies" is a contradiction in terms.

4. My In-Laws Are Typical Ignorant Conservatives
Religious but not crazy. Ignorant from Fox News watching. Smirky and dismissive of anything other than Republican talking points.

Their ribbons are sidways. Why? Because there isn't a large enough vertical space on their car for it.

I wouldn't be surprised if some people have thought of what you're talking about though.

5. No, I think they are aware of this.
There was another topic on this phenomenon a few weeks back. Someone said that they remarked on a sideways ribbon looking like a Jesus fish, and they said something like, "Yeah, that's why I did it."

8. Mine are on not quite sideways
so you can read the text horizontally.

I am not a Christian.

12. I'm sure there is a connection with the stupid Jesus fish, BUT
Many cars just don't have the vertical space to accomodate some of these magnets, which are often quite large. Most folks are probably just putting them where they can.

13. Gee...
...I made the same comment to my husband yesterday! We were driving around town (in NE Ohio) and I said those sideways ribbons look like xian fish!

I'd like to think that's it's a coincidence...or is it?!? :tinfoilhat:

14. I noticed the sme thing
but whether or not it is done on purpose is beyond me. I also briefly considered a "subconscious" reason for turning the ribbon on its side. The upturned ribbon (like the fishy if you pointed it up) predates Christianity and represents...the Gateway of Life. A blatant fertility symbol in time of war my irk a lot of people deep in the recesses of what they call their minds.
