So they've snuffed those Wead tapes?
That's the end of it? What was that about?

Secretly-recorded tapes of Bush discussing drugs given to his lawyer

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Secretly-recorded tapes of then-Texas Governor George W. Bush discussing marijuana and cocaine have been handed over to the US president's private lawyer, White House press secretary Scott McClellan said.

"They are in private hands now," McClellan told reporters, saying they had been given to Bush's personal lawyer.

However, the White House spokesman refused to say whether or not the tapes would be destroyed.

The tapes were recorded by Doug Wead, a one-time spiritual adviser to Bush, who made the recordings secretly between 1998 and 2000 while Bush was the governor of Texas and a presidential candidate.

In the tapes, Bush appears to strategize about the best way to answer potential campaign-trail questions about marijuana and cocaine.

"I wouldn't answer the marijuana question. You know why? Cause I don't want some little kid doing what I tried," Bush is heard telling Wead.

13. I'd even argue with that
I don't know where he made the tapes or under what circumstances. Were they made legally, or was a crime committed? If they are illegal tapes then I think they would belong to the police. If they are legal and he gave them to a reporter, then I think the reporter has rights.

16. The writer made them.
I've heard no one claim they were made illegally, not even Shrub.

6. Republican noise machine...
I found those audio clips amusing at best. I believe they were approved for release at the highest levels...there was NOTHING damaging in them. If anything, they made W look more tolerant...throw a crumb to the disgruntled moderate Republicans CRAP...I didn't buy it. Sorry.

11. W won't win any Academy Awards in my book....
The 10% that was released sounded sooooo phony to me. The questions sounded unnatural and the responses rehearsed. I think it was just a bogus reenactment of imaginary events. Do you think a guy who so carefully scrubbed his National Guard record would really be so careless as to reveal ANYTHING to any non-Rovians outside of the very tight inner circle???

12. How do you know Wead didn't turn all of them over?
Since it doesn't specifically say, I suspect Shrub's lawyer demanded all of them!

14. Isn't Wead an efungelical??
I guess my point is that W is the efungelical leader and it seems really suspicious that any of them would 'hurt' their ordained leader. Is there anyone on this planet who didn't already know that W smoked some pot and snorted some coke? And the 'I won't discriminate against gays' while in reality pledging to back a 'defense of marriage' amendment sounded so staged. An attempt to calm the moderate Republicans who, if they didn't awake before November, are now getting very concerned.

I admit, I could be wrong, but there was nothing really damning in those tapes. If anything, they made W seem more mainstream.

19. There are people on the planet who don't believe Shrub snorted coke.
I stoped at Blockbuster to rent Farenheight 911. The teenaged clerk snickered and said, "You're actually going to watch this thing?" I didn't say anything at first, and he kept talking. "I put it on here while we weren't busy and watched it. Does anyone really want me to believe our President snorted coke? PLEASEEEE!!!"

I resonpded that we are all still free to believe what we decide, aren't we?

He just shut up, finished the transaction, and I left.

YES, there are people who believe little Georgie was a very good boy.

9. Isn't it funny how all the written reports start with the part about bush*
talking about marijuana but just a sentence or 2 (maybe 3) BEFORE that he refers to "cocaine"?

Just "funny", huh?

Disclaimer: I don't mean to say he simply "refers to" or "implies" he's talking about cocaine, I heard the tape on Big Ed Schultz, bush* ACTUALLY SAYS "cocaine" and marijuana before he talks about "he doesn't want kids to do it (cocaine and marijuana) because he DID"
