MATTHEWS: Well, let’s talk about your HARDBALL campaign to become the Democratic candidate next summer in Boston. After last night’s debate, you made an interesting point. You talked about - you said it’s not the best time - “It’s not the best time to put a rookie in charge of our country’s future. It hasn’t been a good time to have a cowboy in charge of our future, but we also don’t need a waffler in charge of our future.”
I’m trying to connect the dots here. This is like a matching test for me. Let’s see. Who would be the rookie, Senator?
LIEBERMAN: Well, I was picking up on something John Kerry said about Howard Dean, and he’s right.
(CROSSTALK)
MATTHEWS: OK. Howard Dean is the rookie? Who’s the loyal American, as patriotic as they come, who’s the cowboy?
LIEBERMAN: Well, I think there’s only one person that fits that description, Chris.
MATTHEWS: The guy with the boots.
LIEBERMAN: He’s from Texas.
MATTHEWS: OK. How about the waffler?
LIEBERMAN: Well, it may fit many people but in that case I was speaking about John Kerry and specifically the various descriptions he has given, the vote he cast to authorize war against Saddam Hussein. I couldn’t believe it, in his announcement a week or so ago when he said he thought he was just threatening Saddam. I mean, It’s pretty clear what we were saying.
