Rummy says some Gitmo prisoners will stay forever

``Our interest is in not trying them and letting them out,'' he said. ``Our interest is in -- during this global war on terror -- keeping them off the streets, and so that's what's taking place.''

http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/national/AP-Rumsfeld-Military-Trials.html?ex=1064237494&ei=1&en=a15387a048a794ae

---------------------------

over 600 men (haven't heard of any women)sitting in small metal boxes for ever.

Who will arrest this criminal Rummy? get him off the streets and out of the white house.

1. Yeah, those sheepherders are a genuine menace to society, or else
they were part of the Taliban tour group hosted by Unocal there in April 2001.

2. my my my... what a country we've become...
just like our evil empire of old. lock 'em up and throw away the key... no charges, no trial, no lawyer, no recourse... nada. That the mainstream accepts this as a plausible answer scares the crap out of me.

3. MOST of these people have not ties to terror organizations...
Rummy and Bush don't want these innocent people set free to tell the worlkd af being tortured.

Remember this is the source of our terror alert changes!
These people are telling Bush what he wants to hear, not what they know or don't know.

We are just as evil as the "evildoing" terrists we are allegedly warring against.

4. So. let me get this straight?
Instead of giving these people a trial, we are going to hold them until the war on terror is over.

The war on terror is a permanent thing.

5. How soon before he's using that argument on you or me?
We don't need an interpreter, folks.

6. Wait a minute- this guy is saying that
trials aren't necessary, because he already knows they're guilty?

What the fuck?

By the way, I'm no lawyer, but I thought our constitution addressed the rights of all *human beings* in relation to the United States. Isn't any person in US custody entitled to the same rights afforded an American citizen? Why is it alright to keep people locked up without trials, or deny them any other rights simply because they aren't American?

I can't walk outside and start shooting illegal immigrants. They're human beings, and murder is against the law. Not murder of *US citizens*, but murder.

And it's not even like they're outside the US. IIRC, American military bases are considered US soil, aren't they?

7. You know what is the most interesting thing about this?
No one seems to care (in the mainstream) what you do to international prisoners. You hear the neocon rhetoric of "Well, they aren't citizens, so why show them any constitutional rights?"

ITS ABOUT OUR REPUTATION, ASSHOLES!!!

How do you think our POWs will be treated when people hear about what the US does to "enemy combatants"? Imagine the US outrage if, instead of being taken to a hospital and treated, Jessica Lynch was instead taken to a metal box to be held indefinately.

These people can only see wrongs when they happen to them. Otherwise, they don't give a shit. To them, these people at Gitmo are evil and deserve to be locked away forever. But what happens when someone they love gets put there, or horribly abused in a similar manner by a nation we are at war with?

These are the same people who think that the US government should endorse religion becuase it happens to be their religion. Its fine if the government is going to force Christianity down everyone's throat, because they believe in it anyway. But you try to get Islam to be the national religon, and watch them go apeshit.

8. Do you think these men "have the goods" on US, and can blackmail US?
By US, I mean the US government. Who knows what shady stories happened involving them and the US intelligence or political officials (like the ones in the White House)?

10. Well, there ARE teenagers at Gitmo
Who knows. Maybe one day Rummy will release these adolescents, like he did the octagenarians who were quartered at Gitmo, after he'd determined, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that when returned to the streets, these AARP terrorists would bring no harm to our troops.

9. Golly, where's Jonah Goldberg when you need him?
I'm sure Lucianne's boy could explain to us just how this rates as no comparison to Hitler and concentration camps.

I'm so old, I remember a time when the U.S. fought against regimes that routinely locked people up without charge or evidence.
