One has to wonder if they are trying to convince us or themselves. The war was not a glimmering success - it is an ongoing disaster. I suppose they think if they say it enough, "it was the right thing to do", then people will start to believe them? Sorry. It was a massive, arrogant blunder and we don't even know what the price will be? We don't know if we will ever be able to repair the damages done.
We understand that a few terrorists attacked our country with hijacked planes and killed a lot of our people. We understand that they attacked the Pentagon, the military brain-center of the world. It was tragic and it was humiliating. We understand that something had to be done. It was not an option not to do anything.
We understand that most of world saw us as a giant that had been brought to our knees by a pebble from the sling of a small terrorist. Naturally, our military leaders, including the CinC, were very angry at the surprising attack. In a matter of days, the anger overwhelmed them. Almost with eyes closed, their anger morphed into the desire for revenge. They did not exact enough revenge in the rockpiles of Afghanistan. They needed more to quench their thirst for the humiliation that the few terrorists had perpetrated on the most powerful nation on earth.
Saddam Hussein was the logical target. He had been sticking his finger in our eye since the days of Poppy Bush. He was also thought to be the most powerful leader in the Arab world. Only by humiliating him could we get "even" in this war on "terrorism". Only by kicking his ass and taking his oil could we bring the humiliating attack to some type of closure.
So our leaders, with military assistance, lied to the people about WMDs, nuclear capability, imminent threats, etc, as a pretext to go in and take care of Saddam Hussein. Unfortunately, the world saw it for what it was - payback for the attack on the WTC and the Pentagon. Somebody had to pay. But the world opinion turned against us. It was not the best way to fight the war on terrorism. World opinion was on our side so long as we were looking for the people that attacked us. However, when we started looking for more blood to revenge, and to send a lesson to the Arab world, we lost the support of the world and much of the support at home. Nobody liked the lies.
