Indy DU'ers: BBV machines to be displayed in Johnson Cnty
Voting machines will be displayed before election

September 12, 2003

Franklin -- Johnson County will unveil its new electronic voting machines Sept. 23 for municipal candidates, the media and selected county officials.

The public will have to wait a little longer. The equipment will be used in the Nov. 4 municipal elections.

"We want the candidates to feel secure with our voting system," said County Clerk Brenda Jones-Matthews. "We've invited all candidates, the media, the county (political) chairmen, the County Commissioners, the County Council, the county attorney, (and) the election board."

The Sept. 23 preview will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Wright Building, 80 S. Jackson St., Franklin.

2. I don't get it.
Why do they think that seeing the machines on display should make anyone more comfortable with what goes on inside them?

3. It's all in appearances.
OR:

Stephen Hawking waits at a bus stop in, oh, southeast-central USA.

How many bets on people picking on the cripple in a wheelchair?

Yes, that's geographically stereotypical. I'd still put money on it.

4. I'm tempted to drive down to raise a ruckus.
The election officials are in WAY over their heads. They are NOT security experts. If R. Doug Lewis is an expert, show us HIS resume!

6. Yes. Hand the media questions. And yes, they are Diebold touch screens
The first media question should be: Why did these machines mistally six races in November 2002 right here in Johnson County?

Followed up by: And what did Diebold Election Systems president Bob Urosevich mean when he said "they count splendidly, they just added it up wrong"

Followed up by: If a person goes into the system using remote access, on election day, to tamper with the vote, how does a demonstration where no one is bothering to access the machines prove anything about security?

Followed by: Please tell us each and every type of remote access that is available. Now, whether or not you say you use it, please give us the names of anyone who can set a dip switch inside the machine.

Oh yes, we can suggest a bunch of questions for this. Remind me around Sept 28 and let's do threads on this and have someone come up with a 1-sheet for the press.

Bev

7. Franklin is a quaint
community. Had breakfast after a meeting at the U in town. Lots of flags downtown - and our menu had lots of "Freedom" food (fries, toast, etc. - all printed in red white and blue). After spending most of my time in Bloomington and downtown Indy, I have to admit breakfast in Franklin felt like I was in another land in another era.
