5. I think it's over

There's been talk that the House people may run this time, but I think the basic feeling is that it's over. They'll fight it on the floor and lose, and then take it to court where they'll probably lose too.

I thik they will get a bit of a compromise map drawn though that only takes 2-3 seats instead of the 4-5 that was talked about.

Yeah, of course the Rethugs are ready to play ball with you, Mr. Whitmire; they're only glad you've returned so they can steamroll us yet again. Rick Perry is scum, but John Whitmire is the true American traitor here. Re-redistricting is a done deal, I believe, but it just pains me to believe it was once again an unprincipled sell-out from my own party that allowed this insanity to go down. Sorry, just venting...

It's just more painful to have a Democrat screw us. I already knew the Rethugs in Texas were worthless, corrupt bastards. The way the Democrats were standing together, fleeing the state, risking arrest, telling it like it is about the insane tactics of the Delay-led right-wing coup attempt was so admirable and really got my hopes up. To have Whitmire's backing down possibly destroy all those months of fighting to stop the bastards; to have one tired (or paid-off, but I'm only speculating, as that is totally something I can't prove) Senator back down and hand the state back over even more fully to the right-wing nutcases is just more infuriating to me. I realize Delay, Perry, Craddick, and the like are unforgivably corrupt, partisan hacks, but I was just certain we were going to take the bastards down this time around...

They had to offer a compromise solution to win. And the solution couldn't be you (the majority) back down and we (the minority) get to dance a jig about how we kicked your asses.

The Texas Dems have a much more difficult to fight here in the state, with every level of government stacked against them. But if I understood correctly, had they held out just three more weeks or so, redistricting would have been dead for the 2004 elections. And I think, minus Whitmire, the rest of them would have, and the minority would have ended up prevailing. Which I truly have no problem with- not simply because I'm a partisan Democrat- but because what the Texas Rethugs are trying to do is a totally unprecedented power-grab if not certifiably insane. I had understood that if they had an endgame strategy it was to at least stall the re-redistricting from occurring until at least after the 2004 elections.

I only hope that if it does come down to "working things out" in the Senate, which it now looks as if it inevitably will, that the Democrats do everything they can to not get steamrolled. None of the Texas Rethugs (with the possible exception of Bill Ratliff) should be trusted any further then they can be thrown. If it's the only option, I hope to see a decent compromise solution, but I have a feeling the Rethugs are going to do whatever they can for maximum gain, as they are seemingly oblivious to the fact that it totally tosses out precedent to redistrict more than once in one decade.
