1. You're probably right
At least I think so. I don't carry at this time, but I am living in a pretty ideal situation. But woe unto the poor motherfucker who tries to get into my home if I catch him.

But yeah, America is largely a nation of gun nuts and paranoid conspiracy freaks. And I don't mean that as disrespecting anyone reading this, I think you folks are among the more sane I have encountered. And just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're NOT out to get you.

2. Matter of right & duty
As far as I'm concerned, it's less a matter of necessity (I don't carry a lot of money or other expensive items around, for example) as a matter of right and duty. As a citizen, I have the right to take any measure necessary to defend my life (and to a lesser extent, my property) and the duty to take any measure necessary to preserve someone else's life should it come to that. And, while I sincerely hope I never, ever have to use a firearm in self-defense, by the same token I'm glad that I have that option.

There are some persons who *do* need to carry a firearm: people who transport expensive items or carry cash because they can't get checking accounts; women whose lives are being threatened by stalkers or violent ex-relations; people who live in dangerous neighborhoods. And, while I agree that social programs should aleviate the need for firearms, that doesn't excuse making concealed carry illegal.
