Fresno Mayor trying to suspend city's human rights commission
http://www.fresnobee.com/local/story/7445084p-8362763c.html

Mayor Alan Autry will try to suspend the city's Human Relations Commission after its chairwoman issued a news release labeling a local conservative organization a "hate group."
Autry vowed Saturday to take action against the commission in the latest clash between the group and more conservative members of the Fresno city government.

He was reacting to a news release Chairwoman Debbie Reyes sent Friday that warned, "a rally is being organized by a hate group called 'The Free Republic.' "

3. I'm not sure they actually qualify as a 'hate group'
It looks to me like FR is simply a website. No real organization, no buildings, no meetings to speak of. Perhaps a "website posting hateful messages", but that's what the 1st Amendment is all about, no?

5. well a very small hate group but definitely heavy on the hate
You should stand in the middle of them when they start a screamin. Its an amazing sight. Headquartered in Fresno, they could only bring out the same small handful of hillbillies to their vaunted annual picnic at a local park. The source of this latest sordid chapter is a series of disruptive imposter posts at SFINDYMEDIA, a strange chapter that cant be summed up:

It would appear attendance has dwindled SUBSTANTIALLY since last year. They must feel so lonely confronting hundreds of antiwar protestors with a miserable 5 or 6 (by stretching the definition) people, showing their pride and ignorance. Dont look, its really pitiful

but nevertheless, their miniscule hatreds can be used to justify any number of injustices. If we let them.

8. Hate is one thing
But they openly publish death threats against people and try to develop harassment campaigns against people. I recall they were particularly nasty with the waitress at the restaurant where one of the twins was busted for underage drinking.

4. the Fresno Republicans are a goddamned hate group!!!
-snip-

Last month, Autry clashed with Reyes when the commission member accused city officials of making racist remarks. This followed the release of an e-mail message in which City Council Member Jerry Duncan said he wished he had a "dirty bomb" to kill every liberal in Fresno.

6. The Human Relations Commission
Edited on Mon Sep-15-03 07:30 PM by Le Taz Hot
though traditionally a wonderful asset to this city, has been temporarily hijacked by a couple of very vocal members who do NOT do their cause justice. I could get into a LOT of detail on this but it was one of THEIR members who referred to me as "the Great White Hope." Now, it's pretty damned difficult to argue against racism and inequality when you are guilty of same. What they need to do is get rid of those members who are causing this disruption instead of using it as an excuse to eliminate the entire commission.

Free Republic, as objectionable as it is, is NOT a hate group. It's a website with a whole lot of misguided, uninformed knuckledraggers, but it hardly qualifies as a hate group in the traditional sense of the word.

And Autry, (we refer to him as "Mayor Bubba" -- he played the "Bubba" character on "In the Heat of the Night") has overplayed his hand several times, INCLUDING trying to eliminate the whole entire Fresno Board of Education. The State stopped him from pulling that one off.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/982599/posts

now what's going to happen when the City of Fresno asks for transcripts of all the Freeper postings and the truth comes out that they are a hate group.
