Rangel Rallies Support For Clark as Candidate

Rangel Rallies Support For Clark as Candidate

By Elaine S. Povich
WASHINGTON BUREAU

September 16, 2003

Washington - With speculation mounting that Gen. Wesley Clark will join the presidential race, Rep. Charles Rangel (D-Harlem) yesterday touted the retired Army general as the Democratic answer to President George W. Bush's role of wartime leader.

Rangel set meetings with members of Congress this week to round up support for Clark, who yesterday summoned political professionals to his Arkansas home to discuss strategy. Separately, the DraftWesleyClark.com organization opened offices in New Hampshire and South Carolina, two early primary states. One Clark supporter who preferred to remain anonymous said it "sure looks like" Clark is ready to run.

2. One of many
My understanding that Rangel is one of many congressmen to support Clark. Marion Berry is supposedly on board. Harold Ford Jr. and Lincoln Davis' names have been thrown out. There are rumors of others (I know Ford endorsed Kerry). I can't wait to see what happens.

5. Marion Berry?
I have a helluva lot of respect for Charlie Rangel, but Marion Berry? I wouldn't get anywhere close to that thug's thug. The mounting black support for Clark is impressive though.
