No More Interstate Batteries For Me

In todays Waco Tribune there was an article on Carlos Sepulvada, CEO of Interstate Batteries.

From the article:

Carlos Sepulveda describes himself as a God-fearing man who relies upon Biblical principles to guide his business and to do what's right by his employees.

He said Interstate Batteries gives a Bible to each employee and has a corporate chaplain on its staff.

Sepulveda said he divides employees into two groups: athletes and parasites.

Asked if he was surprised that Interstate Batteries gives a Bible to each employee, Pieri said, "That's something they can do as a private company. As a public company, it might be a little more difficult."


Who wants to bet that "parasites" are any who do not follow his christian religion. Every time I run into these God, Family Company folks it turns out their God is money the family supported is the CEOs not yours and the company is your life.

running a business on genuine Christian principles might not be such a bad idea after all, you know.

I'd want to know more about this guy. Historically, businesses run by devout Mennonites, Quakers, and some others prospered because they were known to deal honestly.

But "dividing" employees into two groups and calling the ones that do not believe parasites...sorry, reeks of fundie segregation to me.
Anytime a company "divides" anyone for any type of theological reason, you have reason to be fearful.

since the article made no mention of whether or not the "parasites" had any particular beliefs.

Many companies, like GE, have or had policies where the underperformers were pushed out. Agree with the policy or not, it had nothing to do with religion and everything to do with performance.

Sounds to me like he was talking job performance, not theology, but the article doesn't make that clear.

Which is why I would want to know more before making a judgment.

Devout Mennonites and Quaker businesses probably got their reputations by behaving honestly, not saying we are God fearing people so we are honest. His remake about separating his employees into "athletes" and "parasites" sounded too much like sheep and goats on the day of reckoning.

9. He sounds like a conservative Christian to me

Reasons:
1. Has "a" corporate chaplain on staff, as in one. Probably reflects Supulvada's religious viewpoints.
2,. Talks to his company about "principles of living in accordance with biblical guidelines". Again probably his interpretation, other groups guidelines are not biblically influenced and are suspect.
3. "Call your own shots. You should hit a majority of them." This is the wiggle room. If some one meets Supulvada's Christian qualifications they are allowed to fail once in a while. If not nothing you do will be good enough.

And finally Christians do not have the copyright on ethics, as in Christian ethics.

and if perhaps he has religious guidelines and qualifications for hiring I would be upset about that.

But, we just don't know. And, if his "Christian business practices" are to run an honest business with a good product at a fair price, that might not be such a bad thing.

Could use a few more Christian businessmen if that's the case.

But, my point is that we really don't know anything more than what's in the article.

And too many people have already jumped in with the kneejerk reaction to boycott or attack the company by just assuming he's a fundagelical and all-around bad person.

That just ain't right. Kinda like there's something wrong with being a devout Christian.
