3. He's doing very well
Man, Tom has it DOWN re this voting stuff.

Holt just said, as I tuned it, that he didn't want to get into "this conspiracy" stuff, about Republicans own the companies and that Republicans might be favored in elections.

Rush, Rush! WHat IS it with these see-no-evil, hear-no-evil, blind, deaf and dumb Congresspeople, anyway? \

Harmann came right back asking what assurance he has even if he has a paper ballot that the same thing is actually what the computer recorded, and went on to mention Carlucci as CEO of Populex, and Wally O'Dell's breathtaking promise "to deliver Ohio's electoral votes" to Bush.

Then: hard break.

5. Back now
H.R. 3329 ??? That's what Holt just said. That's not what we've been using.

Has 70-ish sponsors, getting more every day. This is taking on a life of its own on the internet because people immed. grasp how important it is that they know that it's working the way they want.

About the paper record: would go into a secure storage box, kept the way election officials keep all reference on elections and that would be the vote on record so that if there's a recount, that's what you would count.

You have the convenience of the speed of the electronic vote, but if there's something wrong you'd have the backup for the recount...

6. 1/2 of 1 percent to have a surprise recount
(that's not enough, btw, most of us believe)

... buffering ...

Mfgrs of the machines are quick to come up with (reasons why this will not work, but) I think it's worth it to make sure people have confidence in their voting process.

He's a physicist. Was a teacher.

More damned buffering...

8. I thought the Holt Bill had spot checks - but only 1/2 of 1% of the..
vote would be subject to spot checks.

9. Back from break, finally
H.R. 2239 IS correct -- whew!

1-800-talk-yes

One reason to use electronic machines is to improve accessibility for people with disabilities (boy, they use this like crazy and IMO this was a set-up by the voting machine industry from the get go).

(descriptions of that)

Tom: But why should be pay Diebold millions of dollars to provide this (accessibility) when we have paid election officials...

Holt: ...I certainly agree with you that the old paper ballots are preferrable in some ways, but the electronic machines are good for people who can't make an x on the paper or ...the disability community is very much involved (fighting this, obviously)

10. DAMN "I don't want my legislation tarred with this conspiracy
(stuff)"...no matter what truth there may be in the discussions.

Questions coming up. I missed everything in between with a phone call.

11. Well, Russ, if you think that the stealing of elections...
is a "crazy conspiracy theory" then there really is no need for your bill.

12. I guess I can understand where he's coming from
No, I can't. What is this 'let's not look to see if there might be wrongdoing. Nope, wouldn't be prudent' shit. (NOT his words, obviously.) Aaarrgh.

Anyway, Tom is asking why not use these machines as fancy printers. LOL.

Holt: that kind of system fits under my legislation, which calls for voters to be able to verify on a separate paper ballot.

Question: I've been nervous about the Pres. election after what happened in FL. I've also been involved in developing software, so I know how easy it is. I was at the forum on computer voting in Phila. a few weeks ago, and I heard you had 40 sign-ons

Holt: I think we have 70, and we're getting more all the day. We're less than half where I'd like us to be with regards to sponsors, and quite a few less among Repubs than I'd like. I have 3 people who had expressed strong interest but I don't know where they stand.

Questioner again: (About his Congressman, Jim Greenwood)

Holt: I haven't talked to him on the floor, he's a thoughtful person who would be a good person to have supporting this bill.

Q again: I'm real nervous about the 2004 election, is there any way this can be done by 2004?

Holt: Yes, but at the rate it's moving we'll have trouble having it passed by the 2004 election, and if we don't get it passed then we will know that will not get some votes counted properly -- which ones we won't know, but we'll know some won't. (Wow, that's pretty strong.)

Tom: ...(some results looked like they had a ) random number generator -- is this just happened with California recall decision?

Holt: Sure, because what the appellate judges were saying was that you can disenfranchise judges by having unreliable voting techniques.

Break. Do these guys have more breaks than talk time? Seems like it.

13. More
LOL -- Hartman likes that 18,181 vote "anomaly" in Comal County, TX, too.

Show is over, I guess. Not bad.

I'm impressed with how much press the subject is getting on its own -- not as a direct result of Bev's fax blasts. We might be getting some traction, people! Keep it up. Call, write, fax and email YOUR representatives to sign on to Holt's bill.

Eloriel
