Would Dean be smart to just quit now?
Candidates should cut their losses early, sometimes.

1. What losses?
I mean, Dean came out of nowhere to become the frontrunner of the Democratic field. I just don't know what losses you are talking about.

He has a lot of money, most of the press calls him the front-runner, he is ahead in most early state polls and he has a huge network of supporters, why quit?

10. How Fair and Balanced of You to say that
My thought would be that I would rather follow the methods of the Old American Republic, with it's infighting and squabbles and FREEDOM to choose candidates than the Bushevik Imperial Model when everyone marches in lockstep, the "candidates" for Emperor are pre-chosen, and the primaries are a sham.

You know, like the process of the ascension of the Emperor Bunnypants*, which more properly, due to it's rigged nature and Stalinistically-predetermined outcome (McCain never had a chance), belongs to the Age of Totalitarianism heralded by the Attempted Coup of 1998 and brought into existence by the Bloodless Coup of 2000.

11. We know very little how Clark will handle himself
Why are people suddenly acting like the game is over? Oh, I know why. People are frustrated with this process. Without any real way at this very moment to determine who is really in the lead, people just want something decisive. I understand that.

It isn't going to happen. No one is going to drop out until after South Carolina, not even Sharpton. And I personally suspect Graham to be the first to go due to money problems.

Believe me, he's far from quitting.

(The call was just between me and Dean...and about 300 other Meetup organizers ).

Also, Dean's campaign membership keeps growing: We're at 401,287 as of today, not to mention the 112k on Dean's Meetup list.

45. Good point. One activist asked me why Mosley-Brown stayed in the race.
I noted that, whatever her reason, she was saying things that needed to be said, things that front runners may not feel free to say, even if they agree with them.

Just because there is one Dean bashing thread after the other here at DU, doesn't mean he isn't going to get votes. He will be the candidate that wins the primaries. You wait and see. He is not my first choice, but I do feel he has the widest appeal and will prevail. I will have no problem voting for him either.

Geez, last I looked Dean was leading in Iowa & New Hampshire and very competitive in South Carolina.

He is raising more money than anyone else and other than several off-the-cuff gaffes has run a virtually error free campaign.

What am I missing? What would be achieved by dropping out before January? Why would any of the 10 candidates drop out before January?

35. Coalition
of the willing is what every staunch person is who wants to see the U.S. survive as a nation whether it be Dean or whomever. The battle has just begun and Dean has spearheaded the fight whether anyone cares to admit it or not. We have a bunch of "lying liars" on the other side so let's not join them. I can tell you that in my town no one even paid any attention until Dean spoke up, seems the rest of the Dubs had been tranquilized into a stupor and are just coming awake. Perhaps Dean may not be the one to get the primary nomination but at least he had not drunk the Bush koolaid. No one needs to quit at this juncture let all the voices be heard, our goal is the same which is to End this administration and Save America and the world!

47. Right! In this campaign, the only reason to want candidates to drop out .
is so that one's own can win the nomination easier and/or earlier. But in this campaign, the important thing is to make Americans more aware of the Bushista fiasco, and all but one of the candidates is doing that. Now, should Lieberman drop out immediately, I wouldn't worry; but he won't -- he still has a lot of intended damage to do to the eventual Dem candidate, whoever that is.

48. So far, Clark has drawn from all of the candidates who have ...
measurable support. His entry will likely be good for the eventual candidate, especially if Clark will settle down and settle for the VP nomination. Certainly Clark's entry looks to be good for purposes of broadcasting the anti-Dubya message.

36. another good reason to change the rules on posting
There is no reasoning behind your statement. Why should Dean quit? he still leads in many polls, has raised and will raise more money this quarter breaking Clinton's record and much of it from small donations, and has a grass root army of 400,000 people and growing. Now tell us why Dean or any other Democrat should get out just because Clark has gotten in.

Are you suggesting that he peaked too early? In that case, it would be traditional to see a precipitous drop before deciding to retire. I can't imagine Dean saying 'ohoh, I'm too far ahead too early in the race; I'd better drop out right away, before anyone can overtake me.'

51. Yes- Let's just crown Cesar now. Who needs elections or primaries?
when we've got Caesar waiting in the wings?

All 9 solid, long-time Democratic candidates in the running with track records we can check as opposed to dazzling military resumes should just call it quits now...

Let us all defer to the wisdom of the storm troopers, hail Caesar and just hand him his crown now.

He may be a little "coy" about it but have no fears; he'll deign accept because the rabble crowd screams so loudly...

BEWARE THE IDES OF MARCH

Lagniappe:

According to Gelzer, the only indication of Caesar having a definite political programme occurs in a letter he wrote to Metellus Scipio in which he declares his aims to be "...tranquillity for Italy, peace for the provinces and security for the Empire".
