About newsguy's October bombshell ...
I just read his thread. And I came up with an intriguing possibility. He said there will be great news that will transform the race in October, and he said it didn't just have to do with Dean. Could it be someone will challenge Bush for the GOP nomination? Clark is already in, and Hillary's not running, so I'm having trouble coming up with Democratic scenarios (unless Gore jumps in). Am I off the wall, or could my guess be a possibility?

1. That's an interesting angle ...
never thought of that.

Hmmmmmm ... the only problem is the oxymoron: "likable republican".

3. Not really doubting newsguy
Okay, maybe just a little. He could restore some credibility if he would tell us what was the "breaking news" story he told us all to watch for one afternoon about a month ago. Remember? He couldn't tell us what it was, but it was going to be really big. Then, at the last minute, the story "got pulled."

Fool me once...

30. Well, he really qualified that. He said it would be a new perspective...
... on some story (the WMD thing? I forget) that we were not used to seeing on CNN. He said it would be presenting the story from a different slant that we here at DU would be surprised and very happpy to see. The implication was that it was a shift in CNN's coverage for the better, not that it would be earth-shattering news.

Alas, the particular story as he said it would air was pre-empted. But overall, the shift in coverage has been evident.

Keep in mind also that he was very close to the story. When you (ALERT: total conjecture here!!!) have a very close hand in writing a story in a way that you have been begging the powers-that-be to allow, and that finally comes to fruition, you are going to be very excited. If he is on the CNN news team, he is very close to all of this and a small change in slant/coverage can seem like a sea change.

5. That's a strong possibility
and one that's been discussed here before. So, let's entertain the thought for a moment and see who it could possibly be. Perhaps McCain will take another stab at it?

McCain the Republican front-runner.

Um. Probably not. Probably some lame local Georgia news like Cynthia McKinney running for congress as a green.

24. They have got to get rid of Monkey Boy* before 2004
one way or the other, in order to win. It would probably be convenient for them to have shithead fire Rummy and Cheney and Condy and Wolfowitz and (have I forgotten anyone) then give him his pink slip. Then run McCain or someone who could run as a popular candidate.

network. Al Franken as the evening news anchor, perhaps? Maybe that's when they'll announce their programming lineup.

13. I'm very intrigued and curious as well,
but for all we know, he may just be pulling our strings. Let's wait and see what, if anything, happens. We've all gotten our hopes up before and nothing's happened.

As for a repuke running against Smirk-even if that's a possibility, I don't know who would be brave enough to do it, since you know how the GOP sticks together and demands total unity. Buchanan, maybe? Except that he wouldn't really have much impact.

14. Lieberman will withdraw
along with several others - narrowing the fields considerably.

However, a Lieberman withdrawal is the best thing that can happen to the Democratic party and the other candidates.

My guess is that is what Clark was waiting for - a confirmation that Lieberman would withdraw from the race if Clark declared.

18. I could see McCain
get in the race. But not as a Republican. Bush is going to face an independent challenge either from the right (an actual conservative or libertarian) or from the center by a McCain. McCain has held the party line (in words if not deeds) since 2000. He's pissed about the slicing of McCain/Feingold. I wouldn't be surprised to see him jump in running in the general election as an independent. Although I'm not sure that would be good for Dean.

McCain = Libertarian
Nader = Green

That would steal all your thunder about Nader stealing votes or whatever.

27. Is Perot crazy enough (and bush hating enough) to go into the race?
Then Jr could exceed his father - in yet another area (worse war results, worse economic results, more damaging recession... and losing more votes to Perot!)

34. A factor to consider - anyone who becomes VP is a surefire
"in" to be the nominee for President in the next round. Therefore, a lot of people may be willing to "step down" to that level.
