18. My mom saw the light

My grandfather was a Republican politican, so Mom grew up as a Republican.

She loathed the Kennedys even though she was an Irish Catholic.

Her affiliation with the Democratic Party came late in life. She liked the Clintons. She hated what the Republicans were doing to the Clintons. She is passionately anti-Bush. She says she will never vote for another Republican in her life again.

I have been a Democrat all my adult life. I think I'm the only one in my immediate family who can say that.

She said the whole lot of them were miserable lying bastards not worth the effort to vote for. She used to think differently back before the 60's, though, but I'm not sure who she voted for. I'm guessing she was a moderate Independent. Hunting was always big where I grew up, so she would never vote for anyone who wasn't pro gun. Aside from that very big issue everything else she would lean Democratic, but guns would make my family vote Republican in a heart beat.

Still is, and a hell of an interesting woman. She's 84. She had an interesting career before having 4 kids, married late for the time, had all of us after she was 35. She worked for the OSS (office of Strageic Services) in Europe. She's fluent in 4 languages. Went on to work for the Voice of America. 3x delegate to the National Convention, active in the League of Women Voters. She's an autocratic, annoying grande dame, but brilliant, funny and passionate in her devotion to the Democratic Party.

My mother's a stone-cold Leninist Communist. Seriously, I'm not bullshitting. OTOH, my father is a moderate-liberal whose semi-socially conservative, but he ALWAYS votes Democratic.
