Foreign policy moving away from world:

http://www.oregonlive.com/news/oregonian/david_sarasohn/index.ssf?/base/editorial/104704176668620.xml

"The structure of world peace cannot be . . . an American peace, or a British peace, or a Russian or a French or Chinese peace," declared Roosevelt in his last speech to Congress, in March 1945, at a time when the United States was the greatest power in the world, the only power not shattered by war and about to become the only nuclear power.

". . . It must be a peace which rests on the collaborative effort of the whole world."

We're marking this week not only in preparation for another war, but in a widening gap between the United States and other major powers of the world. The United States, according to Zbigniew Brzezinski, Jimmy Carter's national security adviser, "has never been so isolated globally, literally never, since 1945."

2. that analogy doesn't make sense
In 1945, the United States was allied with Great Britain, France, Nationalist China, the Soviet Union and had just formed the United Nations. Our relations with Western Europe were incredibly good, given our efforts in WWII and the importance of the Marshall Plan. Our relations were good with Latin America following the Good Neighbor Plan.

A better analogy would be more isolated since the 1920's, when the United States withdrew from all foreign relations to concentrate on
"prosperity and normalacy."

3. I don't quite get this...and I'm not an historian. Clue me in
We were pretty well connected with all English speaking nations in 1945. And I think we had or a pretty good connection with France, Belgium, Italy and Holland I seem to remember even counting China as an ally in '45.

I think that for a while in 45 Russia was an ally. I think that Norway was friendly, while Sweden and Switzerland were neutral but on speaking terms with us. Our relations with European powers sort of set the stage in Africa, but I don't have a clue where we were in relationships with Latin America.
