F-16's Narrowly Misses Commercial Airliner -St. Louis

A commercial airliner en route from OK to St. Louis yesterday was narrowly missed by F-16's. Apparently, there was no warning from air traffic controllers. The airplane was forced to take a deep plunge, nose down maneuver, to avoid disaster. In addition, 5 passengers were injured and 1 hospitalized. This was on St. Louis nightly news last night I'll try to find a link.

1. There's a lot of F-15's and F-16's that fly in and out of Lambeau

Field.

Once I saw one go "ballistic" after takeoff while I was in a hotel parking on St. Charles. The much louder than thunder roar set off car alarms all over the parking lot.

I really wonder how a military pilot could have let this happen.

9. They are indeed very loud. For the past few weeks, I've noticed

more in the skies around St. Louis, they have that unmistakable noise.

10. F-16s? or F-15s?

Lambert is an F-15 unit not F-16's. I'm sure they get F-16's in there from time to time (like in this instance being discussed), but more likely you are hearing F-15s.

11. Lambert is right out the window...

of my office, and since 9/11/01 there has been a tremendous increase in Missouri Air National Guard training flights. They fly F-15's, built right across the runway at Boeing.

The aircraft that almost hit the airliner were F-16s, and it happened near Tulsa or Oklahoma City - I've seen stories that said both.

12. I only know the military planes around here sound very different from

commercial airliners. Last week I swore I could hear them about every 15 minutes all day which is unusual for here. Usually it's only in the morning and sometimes in the afternoon. But as for as what the news said last night, they said it was F-16's that almost hit the airplane.

2. Did They Mention TCAS?

I'm wondering if that was a TCAS (Traffic Collision Advoidance System) alert. TCAS is a piece of equipment aboard passenger airlines that literally shouts at the pilot what to do to avoid a mid-air collision.

I'm guessing -- just a guess -- the F-16 was in the bad, but we'll see. I hope everyone makes a full recovery. Yet another reminder to keep your seatbelts on -- low and tight -- at all times!

Were the pilots blind?? Jesus, they're supposed to have incredible vision and whatnot.

6. Depends on what mode the pilot

had the radar set on, the wx in the area, the whole nine yards. BTE not all AF pilots (or ANG pilots) have incredible vision.

5. It was on channel 5 at 10:00 pm last night and yes they implied the F-16

was in the bad.

is done by civilian contractors. Field maintenance is done by blue-suiters and some contractor Field Service Representatives.

13. Isn't The Military Moving Fighters To Lambert Field?

Seems to me I caught a short news brief saying the Military was moving fighters out of Isabel's path into the midwest and I believe Lambert field was mentioned.
