19. Half Jewish?
Edited on Thu Sep-18-03 10:27 AM by Brian Sweat
I understand what you mean, but there is no such thing as being "half Jewish." If your mother is Jewish, you are Jewish. If she is not, then you are not (unless you convert.)

Hey, it's their rules.

24. Jew rules
Actually that really depends on your "brand" of Judiasm.
Orthodox and Conservative use the mother rule.
Reform Judiasm will call it for either parent.
And then there are the rules for converting.

17. But WAIT!!
Jimmy Carter was--IS, rather--a born-again fundy. The difference is that Carter is born again in Christ and believes in the fundamental truths of the Bible. Falwell & company are born again con artists who believe in the fundamental truths of Mammon. Those people have done for atheism what Osama bin Laden has done for Americanism.

20. thanks for the clarification
Fundamentalism has been significantly co-opted in the last 25 years and Jimmy Carter is the living, breathing embodiment of what true fundamental Christianity was about.

21. May I repeat, Jerry Falwell was hired to run the "Moral Majority"
by rightwing Catholics who devised that nutty organization. Paul Wyrich the leading rightwing Catholic author and devisor of nutty organizations also appointed Cal Thomas rightwing Catholic "columnist" as second in command of the sleazy organization that Moral Majority was. Actually, Paul Wyrich has a number of sleazy, propaganda spewing organizations including the awful Heritage Foundation and apparently, from what I recently saw on the web, some "conservatives" are actually beginning to wonder about this and about what Paul Wyrich really is and what the "rightwing" really is. Amazing!

And don't knock those of us who are non-theists, Jerry Falwell didn't turn us into non believers. Those of us who don't believe in or find it necessary to postulate the existence of a "supreme being" are obviously not easy marks for rightwing religious bs and we are, for the most part, ethical and caring people, extremely concerned for the earth and for the welfare of all its people. It is people who believe that their "god" can and will put the earth back together just for them if they destroy it who are the dangerous people, i.e., those who are "true believers".

23. There's a difference
... between fundamentalism and conservative Christianity. It's subtle, but not all Southern Baptists are "fundies."

Recommended reading on the subject: book, The Battle for God, by Karen Armstrong.

4. Since he's catholic
I have no choice but to put him on my short list of people I will have no qualms voting for (that list includes John Kerry).

Did anyone see Fox News' coverage when the story first broke? Instead of listing off his qualifications, they talked at length about his disagreements with the Bush Administration.

However, we have elected only one non-WASP as president in our history. His religion hurts his electibility, even in 2003.:(

10. You are probably right on that one.
It shouldn't make a difference but to a lot of people it does. GW got many votes because he convinced people he was a "good Christian".

11. Heard on Tv
(Can't remember which channel) that he was raised Southern Baptist and then converted to Catholicism. Don't know if because of marriage or not.

Suspect marriage, since he is pro choice.

However, I agree strongly that it is PRIVATE business. The fact that people are interested shows how much the Fundies have captured this admin and the media.
