Clark's running mate

Should General Clark win the Democratic nomination there will likely be a lot of pressure on him to select a woman or a non-white as a running mate. Doing so would help him shore up his base with the liberal wing of the party. Ideas? I like Mary Landrieu or perhaps Rep. John Lewis of Georgia.

A) Clark HOPEFULLY won't have to prove anything to the liberal wing of the party

B)Edwards is the closest thing to a real black guy in this race, considering that Braun is not a guy and Sharpton is not a REAL guy, but a career activist. No black guy I know gets to fly around in jets, talk to world leaders, and complain about stuff.

c) Pure electoral politics would suggest that if Dean or Kerry do not get the nomination to begin with, they won't be chosen as VPs, being from strong blue states. It's either Edwards, Gephardt, or possibly Graham or Richardson.

I have to say that I think the likelihood of one of the current candidates being the VP candidate is less than 30%. I also think Graham and Edwards are the most-likely VP choices - not Clark, not Dean, not Kerry, not Kucinich.

I don't recall when the last first-runner up was chosen as the VP candidate by the winner. Usually, by the end of the primary season, they've spent so much effort slamming each other that their own words come back to haunt them (remember GHWB's "voodoo economics"?).

He may want to shore up someone with more experience on domestic issues. That shouldn't be to hard with the goal of a woman or minority. We need a woman or a racial minority there. The way I see it it is long overdue.

but while i agree it's way overdue, this is probably NOT th election for it.

Security will be the #1 issue in the election, and fair or not, women don't have the same credibility in that department that men do. It sucks. It's unfair and untrue. But that's the common perception, especially among straight white men, who we NEED to convert in 2004 (and why Clark is such an appealing candidate).

The only woman right now with credibility in this area, whether rightly deserved or not, is Condoleeza Rice. I wouldn't be surprised to see her on the Bush ticket if Cheney steps down.

Being from Louisiana, I will say that it is my opinion that Landrieu on the ticket would deliver Louisiana to the dems in 2004. It was pretty close last time, and this state is very fond of our hometown girl, even if the pugs did try to destroy her. For those who might not know, the Landrieu family has been in politics in Louisiana for generations and are well thought of. On the other hand, we also really need Florida, and Bob Graham, IMO, would make a fine VP.

I think Clark's percieved weakness would be his lack of elective experience. Therefore, I think he would take an experienced legislator. A Lloyd Bentson type.

I also would think it more likely he pick a centrist than a leftist. After all, where are the leftists going to go?
