5. No.
F-knows what Goldsmith was flapping about -- possibly because the summary of his legal advice was retyped & therefore wasn't the original.

Btw -- here's a link to the more interesting leaked document:

4. Here's a BBC article
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/politics/vote_2005/frontpage/4506943.stm

It says The Sunday Times published a leaked memo:

Mind made-up

On Sunday, Mr Blair played down a leaked memo indicating he was looking at ways to justify war with Iraq in July 2002 - eight months before the conflict.

The Sunday Times has published what it says is a leaked memo dated 23 July 2002 by Matthew Rycroft, a former Downing Street foreign policy aide.

In the memo, Foreign Secretary Jack Straw is quoted as saying US President George Bush had "made up his mind to take military action even if the timing was not yet decided. But the case was thin".

It adds: "Saddam was not threatening his neighbours, and his WMD capability was less than that of Libya, North Korea or Iran.

"We should work up a plan for an ultimatum to Saddam to allow back in the UN weapons inspectors. This would help with the legal justification for the use of force."

If it's still on the BBC pages, I would think it is accurate.

The issue of Britain's role in the U.S.-led invasion has been rekindled by a series of memos and documents leaked to British newspapers, indicating that Prime Minister Tony Blair intended to participate almost a year before the assault took place in March, 2003

The attorney general, Lord Goldsmith, issued a memo March 7, 2003, saying the legality of going to war with Iraq was questionable unless it could be shown overwhelmingly that Saddam Hussein was in gross violation of United Nations resolutions.

Ten days later, Blair's government had an opinion from the attorney general concluding the war would unquestionably be legal.

Blair was on the defensive for two days. Britain's newspapers, outwardly political to varying degrees, jumped on the issue. Friday's Daily Express ran a headline: "Our Sons Died for Lies."

<snip>

Under pressure after declining to release the memos from the attorney general, Blair ordered the documents released Thursday.

Blair Releases Memo Questioning Legality of Iraq War
As National Election Nears, Opposition Renews Accusations That Prime Minister Misled British Public

LONDON, April 28 -- The Iraq war, until now a slumbering issue in Britain's election campaign, came to life Thursday after Prime Minister Tony Blair gave in to pressure and released a confidential memo from his chief legal adviser that raised questions about the legality of the invasion.

Coming a week before the May 5 contest, the disclosure of the two-year-old opinion was seized upon by the two main opposition political parties, which leveled fresh accusations that Blair had misled Parliament and the public in making the case for war.

For Blair, Iraq Issue Just Won't Go Away
By ALAN COWELL

Published: May 2, 2005

HOVE, England, May 1 - If there is one campaign issue that Prime Minister Tony Blair would prefer to wish away before Britons go to the polls on Thursday, it is probably the question of his integrity and credibility in the way he handled the period leading up to the Iraq war.

But on Sunday, Iraq came back to haunt him yet again in a newspaper article suggesting that he had committed himself to an American plan for "regime change" months before he told either Parliament or the people that British participation in the American-led invasion was all but inevitable.

<snip>

But The Sunday Times published details of a leaked document dating to July 2002 - eight months before the Iraq war - recording a meeting between Mr. Blair and his close advisers, in which he seemed to swing behind American arguments for "regime change."

As the war approached, Mr. Blair said frequently that the reason for it was to force Saddam Hussein to comply with United Nations resolutions calling on him to disarm, and Mr. Blair denied that he was seeking to force a change of leadership in Iraq. Indeed, in a previously secret document made public last week, Britain's attorney general, Lord Goldsmith, said forcing a change of leadership could not be used as a justification for invasion.

15. Tony Blair is a liar and a war criminal
Xymphora
Sunday, May 01, 2005

The B-liar timeline is fairly simple:

1. From a letter <1> from Gordon Logan to Reg Keys (the guy who's running <2>against Blair!; see also here<3>) dated April 29, 2005:
"All the discussion on the Iraq war is essentially a diversion. There is a secret clause in the Trident submarine treaty that was signed by Mrs Thatcher in 1983. The secret clause states that the British Prime Minister is required to go to war if he/she gets the order from the President of the United States. You will appreciate that this information explains a lot, notably why Blair has repeatedly gone to war, but only when required to by the Americans. It also explains why Blair is so different from his Labour predecessors, such as Harold Wilson, who refused to send our troops to Vietnam in 1968. The secret agreement was designed by Thatcher to secretly tie the hands of British Prime Ministers for many years to come. Without naming sources, I received this information from a British Army officer a couple of years ago."

2. In March 2002, Blair received <4> legal advice from the Foreign Office that an attack on Iraq was illegal under international law. The advice was drafted by the Foreign Office's deputy legal adviser, Elizabeth Wilmshurst, who resigned on the eve of war in protest at what she called a 'crime of aggression'.

3. Blair met with Bush in Crawford <5> April 2002 and received his marching orders - literally! - that Britain must support the American attack on Iraq.

4. Blair chaired a war meeting <6> with his inner circle in July 2002, in which it was planned to arrange a reason for war. From The Independent:
". . . the Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw, had warned that the case against Saddam was 'thin'. He suggested that the Iraqi dictator should be forced into a corner by demanding the return of the UN weapons inspectors: if he refused, or the inspectors found WMD, there would be good cause for war."

THAT'S IT. THAT is what CBS thinks you need to know about the WORLD!!!!

No British Memo. In fact NO NEWS of the British Election, Tony's troubles. NO NEWS about our closest Coalition ally.

Iraq leak puts pressure on Blair

Sunday, May 1, 2005 Posted: 11:11 AM EDT (1511 GMT)

LONDON, England -- UK Prime Minister Tony Blair and U.S. President George W. Bush were determined to topple Saddam Hussein at least nine months before they launched the war in Iraq, according to documents leaked to a British Sunday newspaper.

Observers say the secret documents could have an impact in Britain's election on Thursday, in which Iraq -- and whether the prime minister told the truth when making his case for war -- has resurfaced as an issue in the final week of campaigning.
