Marketing Armageddon for fun and profit
I stumbled across this site this morning http://www.leftbehind.com/default.asp

It's a site devoted to merchandising the Left Behind series. Here you can buy books, audios, videos. Don't miss the collectibles collection and be sure to get your daily Left Behind quote.

They even have a toll-free line: Talk to someone about your eternity. Call the 24 hour toll free hotline at 1-866-321-SEEK and Tim LaHaye will personally recommend End Times resources to you via a Quicktime video.

Interesting poll on the site:
Was Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore right to defy a federal court's order to remove his Ten Commandments display from the state's judicial building rotunda?
Yes, removing it is an affront to God = 2255
Yes, display should be protected as free speech = 2549
Yes, as chief justice, he's the law's arbiter = 193
No, he should have removed it during his appeals = 148
No, this wasn't worth civil disobedience = 101
No, he is not above the law of the land = 718
I don't know = 307

My favorite, though, is the Prophecy Club:
You’ve asked the questions. Now get answers from a respected, authoritative perspective. Subscribe to the Left Behind Prophecy Club.

Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins, best-selling authors of the Left Behind series, along with noted Bible historian and end times analyst Mark Hitchcock have teamed up to lead the Left Behind Prophecy Club.

As news breaks and world-changing events unfold, you will be the first to receive in-depth analysis and interpretation from LaHaye and Hitchcock.

• Weekly Analysis of world events in light of end-time prophecy
• Your questions answered by LaHaye, Jenkins and Hitchcock
• Exclusive message boards.
• Free copy of Are We Living in the End Times by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins - a $20 value. (Offer available to U.S. Residents only)

So, what do you think about the Left Behind phenomenon? What explains its popularity? Do you think it is being used to shape people's opinions and actions?

3. Harry Potter's better.
Especially because Rowling's books outsell this trash by a margin of 10-1. No wonder they all scream "Demon posessed witchcraft peddler" whenever she comes up. They can't stand that she writes better books.

4. A little worried
A very good friend of mine who used to describe herself as a "Scandanavian Socialist" (she has strong Finnish heritage) got into the whole "Left Behind" thing about two years ago. Now, she ends our conversations with either "God Bless You" or "Jesus loves you". Her car now sports a "When that trumpet blow, I'm outa here!" bumper sticker.

She is well aware of my views on religion and fundies in general. We've grown very distant over the past two years.
