Leave Bush alone, writer urges Europe
I understand Jonathan Franzen's sentiment but would lives be saved if our soldiers weren't facing this mess alone?

HAMBURG, Sept 17: Acclaimed US writer Jonathan Franzen, making clear his antipathy to President George W. Bush's actions in Iraq, said Europeans should leave Bush "dangling" at least for another year - until the November 2004 presidential elections.

In an interview to appear in Thursday's edition of the weekly magazine Stern, Franzen accused the Republican Party in the United States of having invented Iraq as an enemy.

1. To answer your question:
No. Lives would be saved if they were home.

My humble opinion.

2. Not so crudely...
One of the few things I can imagine helping Bush is the perception that foreign powers are trying to manipulate our election. (and no need to comment on the irony, thanks, I know our history).

On the other hand, the Shrub administration has been demonstrably misleading and untrustworthy, so there's no reason to jump just because they say so (much less ask 'how high').

4. JHB, I've thought about that too...
But decided that the Euros are damned if they do, damned if they don't. In the minds (sic) of the wingnuts, they (Euros) were weasels for not supporting George's Excellent Adventure, and they'll be weasels for refusing to bail us out. They may as well stay out of it...

3. Europe should help...
Help get US military out of Iraq and stabilize that country. Yes, let Bush dangle... but put his ass on trial for war crimes.

5. Bush* still refuses to compromise with other nations.

And they *are* asking for things that *will* hurt his political campaign if he accepts. And if he doesn't accept, then the deteriorating situation *will* hurt his political campaign.

He (and by our association, us) is between a rock and a hard place. I hope that he'll choose to hurt his campaign by comprimising which will save lives, rather than choosing to hurt his campaign by refusing to comprimise.

6. Why would they want to send people to replace Americans as sitting ducks
targets to be shot at?...They were against the war all along and I doubt if the citizens of the European countries would be happy to send troops?...
