Clark will attend next week's debate
WASHINGTON (AP) --

Retired Gen. Wesley Clark will participate in the Democratic
presidential debate next week, party officials said Thursday.

Democratic National Committee spokeswoman Debra DeShong said Clark's
campaign confirmed that he will be at the party's debate on economic
issues next Thursday in New York City.

----

I have to say, I was sweating that one. Clark had previously
scheduled obligations and apparently had to free himself up
from them to confirm being at the debate.

Some here have argued that the Draft Clark movement is a sham
and that this was all a show. Well, I hope this is some indirect
proof that what we did was for real. If Clark had planned to
get in all along, he wouldn't have created a scheduling conflict
about something so important.

Anyway, there are many indicators of this and I think a lot
of people are just worried Clark is stealing their candidate's
thunder. Relax. Clark is going to work with all of us to turn
this country around. He's not perfect and we will have to
make compromise, but that is part of a real Democracy.

Clark made a direct reference to including Republicans and
Independents in the process. If that bothers some here, to
hell with you. I love America more than I love my "pet issues".
I think Clark is great. I think people here have basically
used a bunch of ill-founded talking points to distort
Clark's image. I also think he is going to kick ass in the debates
and will shine. The other guys have had almost a year of
presenting themselves and they haven't rocked anyone's world,
except for maybe Dean. It's time to give Clark a chance and
cut all the "conspiracy theory" paranoia crap out. Also,
it's time for the Democratic party to take back national defense
as an issue. Believe or not, national defense is really important.
It's kind of what helped the Allied powers defeat the worst
of fascists, Hitler. Furthermore, we are in a war of sorts,
whether we like it or not, and we need someone who will make
an excellent wartime President. That is the whole theme
that Bush will run on and we need to remember that. No matter
how much money we raise, the Republicans will raise more and
will outspend, and attempt to outflank. We need a special
weapon, and I believe that is someone who is the total package
that can appeal from the left to the right. People like Kucinich
don't cut it. Even Dean, a real moderate Centrist, won't cut it.
WE, the people of the US, are a village and when the villagers see
themselves as being under assault, they want a strong bold chief.

Clark is that man.

If he is not left enough for you, or squeeky clean on
every little detail that you can bring to bear with the aid
of a google search, fine. But he is a great man with the
capacity to lead in difficult times. He has faults and will
have some skeletons, but everyone does. There is no Democratic
candidate that is any cleaner than Clark. If they were all to
be examined in the excrutiating detail Clark has been examined here,
their faults would be glaring.

But don't give me the "welcome to DU, all the candidate have had
this". I know that is partly true. But people have gone overboard.
I mean, when DU'ers and Rush Limbaugh are saying the exact
same things about a Democrat, there has to be something wrong.
When DU'ers are quoting the Wall Street Journal and relying on
it as holy fact, there has to be something wrong. When Fox News
appears more rational and "fair and balanced" than some DU'ers, there
has to be something wrong.

Anyway, Clark isn't going away no matter how some here wish
it. Clark is very admired by very powerful people for a reason,
he is Uber. We need an Uber President. I am tired of settling
for phony politicians, left or right.

12. Absolutely!
Last night, I was pleased to hear he'd make it, then distraught because he couldn't make it. Glad to see they worked out the scheduling conflict. You got it maple, if he's in, he better be in.

2. Thank you, General MacArthur (or should I call you Emperor)
You think Rumsfeld has an acerbic personality; wait till you learn more about Clark. He ordered the first unprovoked bombing on a major European city since Hitler. He also followed in the tradition of Reagan , when RR ordered the assassination of the head of Libya (Ghadaffi). Clark wanted to "take him out" (referring to Milosevic), and it goes on dn on and on. He was fired by Defense Secretary Cohen three months early from his NATO job because our closest allies felt he had tried to bully them into attacking Russian planes that were landing in Serbia. An act which the British refused to go along with, out of legitimate fear it would cause the start of WWIII (and Russia has how many thousand nuclear warheads? 22,000?).

Think twice before you glom onto that guy (who has never shed a tear for anyone lower on the pecking order than himself).

5. Thanks Karl
Just go ahead and repeat all the talking points Karl Rove leaked to the media for the purposes of undermining General Clark's strength with liberal Democrats. You expect us to boo hoo over Slobadan Milosevic? Had he been taken out there might have been less genocide in the Balkans. And that story about the Russians in the airport has morphed into an urban legend. This Administration--which we are trying to defeat--has come far closer to starting WWIII on numerous occaisions than General Clark.

3. Good
I knew the General would come around. One of the major criticisms being lobbed at him is that his issue positions are not well known. This debate will help put those concerns to rest. I guess JOhn Kerry won't be able to say "I'm the only candidate who has ever fought a war" anymore! :)

4. Debate - Television Coverage Info (CNBC)
Edited on Thu Sep-18-03 07:37 PM by VolcanoJen
The good news is that, once again, the debate will be televised nationally (to folks who receive CNBC, that is). The bad news is that the debate starts at 4:00 PM ET, which means a lot of good working folks will have to wait for the repeat.

From TVGuide.com:

4:00 PM Channel 40 CNBC Thursday, September 25

Presidential Debate
Democratic Candidates
90 mins.

Democratic presidential candidates meet in a forum focusing on economic issues sponsored by CNBC and the Wall Street Journal. Brian Williams moderates the debate, which is telecast from Pace University in lower Manhattan. Journalists from CNBC and the Wall Street Journal pose the questions.

7. I'm curious to see how he does here.
As an ex-economist myself, I know how hard it is to get away from the jargon, which I still use to this day, when trying to explain certain issues; it's taken me years to get to the point where I don't use words like 'aggregate' and 'marginal' as part of every day speech. Going into a pressurized environment like this debate, he might end up coming across a little stilted and academic. This is going to be an excellent challenge for him.

8. Excellent post
What I find particularly humorous is that for months, Clark backers have been told it was too late for the General to raise enough dough or gain any core support. In short, they said that he couldn't be a "player" in the Democratic party.

And now that he's lining up Congressional endorsements and assembling a pretty impressive campaign staff, he's being called well-financed insider.

Gotta love it :)
