As of 11 AM Central time MSNBC was still talking about 3 Americans killed. Or is this another attack? I watched news last night and didn't see anything about 8 dead.

3. The huge 10 hour battle near Tikrit resulted in 3 dead.

But that sounds really questionable to me.

The story the international media reports about where 8-10 were killed in those burning hummvees is reported in US media as 2 wounded.

The real numbers HAVE TO COME OUT and they will someday.

4. NPR reported this morning that fighting went on all night

NPR reported this morning that it was an ALL night battle
that went on till this morning - Friday morning.


So if fighting went on all night.....

how many of the wounded died immediately, and how many
will die in the next week from wounds suffered in that
lengthy battle last night?

For a battle to last all night there must have been
a lot of casualties.

But dont count on the Pentagon to report how many.
The Pentagon will 'stagger' out the count, so as not to
alarm the American public. If at all.

They just said the 3 soldiers killed in Tikrit happened in 3 separate "raids" where they arrested 55 people.

DAMMIT...LBN has a link to the Colonel who described the 10 hour long battle where they called in air support and mechanized division!!!!

9. Thanks all--now I think I'm more confused than before.

I've often wondered if there were some way for them to be hiding the true number. Maybe telling some of the families that the names of their lost loved ones can't be released for security reasons?

And if, as has often been suggested, the ones who die after being evacked to Germany or wherever aren't counted, how are the families handling that? "Our boy was sounded in Iran but died in Germany. Therefore he isn't an Iraq war fatality."--Maybe that's the way it works: "No we didn't put Johnny on the KIA list because he died in Germany." Maybe there are a lot more "died in Germany" & therefore uncounted deaths than is actually the case--i.e. Junior got his head blown off in Iraq but got pronounced dead in Germany, so the family is told that he was wounded but later died in Germany or Bethesda & therefore wasn't listed KIA.

3 dead in Tikrit seemed to have been confirmed, tho' in Khaldiyah it ranges from 2 injured to 8 dead. There were probably other incidents than just those 2 yesterday, though that seems to be the only dead (battles with injuries are not reported as often).

12. Here's why I think something is going on

Right after the news about the first ambush broke here, I went to Yahoo and read the story. They had a gruesome photo of headless and very burned body lying on the ground, with a soldier standing nearby. What was that? The military was claiming only two injuries from that attack; that poor soul in the picture looked quite beyond just injured to me. When I went back an hour or two later to get the link of the photo, it was missing, and there was just Yahoo's slideshow of the day for Iraq, with 209 mostly non-combat pictures, and certainly nothing like what I had seen earlier.

There's more than that. Yesterday, someone posted this link. It's a good piece by itself, but this caught my eye :

"The Americans stay on another planet - in bunkers. Humvees venturing out on patrol are subject to all number of attacks in broad daylight. Like this Wednesday, when a still sweating resident of Zayouna tells how he saw, through his rear-view mirror, a Humvee being hit by a roadside bomb and another backing up to collect two dead American soldiers and speed away. He can hardly believe that his car was not hit. Locals inevitably tell a foreigner: "Don't be near any Humvees or jeeps, even walking in the street. The American soldiers are so frightened they start shooting at random every time they hear an explosion."

OK, what was THAT? There was nothing in the news on Wednesday about a roadside bomb killing (or even wounding) two U.S. soldiers. I suppose that reporter could have just made that up, but I'm not so sure.
