:argh: :argh:

"EP under Governor Dean meant Expedite Permits, not Environmental Protection."

-Annette Smith, Director of Vermonters for a Clean Environment

"Howard Dean's environmental record in Vermont is toxic."

-Tom Elliott, fmr. Political Director of Vermont Sierra Club?

Any truth to this? Isn't Dean a great envriomentalist? Or is this like the Clark smear jobs, apeice of worthless crap?

2. it's mixed..
He backs Yucca mountain (which really pisses me off), agribusiness (which kinda pisses me off), and GM foods (which I'm very conflicted about). He also has a bunch of pluses and times he stood up against industry but he's definately not an environmental crusader.

16. Where did you get
the idea that he supports GM foods and agribusiness? Can you back that up? I live in Vermont and follow politics closely. You're correct on the Yucca Mountain thing, and I wasn't thrilled about that, but I do want to note that the waste Vermont would/wil be sending is about as low level as you can get. There is no agribusiness in Vt. None. And Dean was always very supportive of family farms, particularly in helping find new markets for small farm products. Over the last 10 years, Vermont has become one of the leading states in the production of artisan cheeses. I have never seen any evidence that Dean support GMOs.

3. Here's a suggestion
Try Googling those names. Then, instead of waiting for someone else to do the legwork, you could post your findings here and be a contributor

4. Here you go>>>>>>>>>>.
http://www.cmonitor.com/stories/news/state2003/082103dean_env_2003.shtml

Tom Elliott, the former volunteer political director for the Vermont Sierra Club, said he stood outside a Dean fundraiser the week of the coal controversy wearing a sign that said, "Shame on you, Dr. Dean."

"Howard Dean's environmental record in Vermont is toxic," he said the other day.

HMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!

7. He has a good environmental record

http://www.deanforamerica.com/site/PageServer?pagename=policy_statement_environment

Some of the Vermonters on the board have said that Annette is rather radical. For instance, she wanted her area to go off the electricity grid. Elliot, I don't know about.

9. Didn't Dean tell CATO crowd he's FOR deregulating electricity?
Shouldn't that be a problem?

11. I live in Nevada and was disapointed that he backed Yucca
mountain, saying that I would prefer to hear what his alternatives are instead of trashing him, while Yucca mountain is unacceptable to most in NV but is approved by most in the 49 other states. No candidate and I mean no candidate can be all things to all people that includes Dean and Clark.

12. What's the status of Yucca Mountain anyway?
I'm sure they're going forward, but any lawsuits planned, or started?

13. Here's the quote:
""You folks at Cato," he told us, "should really like my views because I'm economically conservative and socially laissez-faire." Then he continued: "Believe me, I'm no big-government liberal. I believe in balanced budgets, markets, and deregulation. Look at my record in Vermont." He was scathing in his indictment of the "hyper-enthusiasm for taxes" among Democrats in Washington."

Apologies for the source, it was like the top mag article at Google, and I couldn't find the thread here at DU--it was here some days ago.

I'd imagine the address took place in the mid nineteen nineties.

Not a problem at all!

15. Is this the quote you mean?
"Believe me, I'm no big-government liberal. I believe in balanced budgets, markets, and deregulation. Look at my record in Vermont."

I don't see the part about electricity. Maybe you could source that. I'd be interested.

I know he sued to keep VT off the national power grid but not that he's specifically "FOR deregulating electricity".
