Toxic fumes at WTC
Background: A couple of days ago we were discussing the Administration's orders to the EPA, after the WTC attack, which had the EPA state there was no danger from toxic fumes.

Update: Last night, our local news was doing a profile of a local man who has rescue dogs. He had his dogs at the WTC for, I believe, about six weeks. Just as an aside, the news folks mentioned that TWO of his dogs HAVE SINCE DIED from the effects of inhaling toxic fumes!!!!!

The statement was easy to miss, and there was no mention of the effect on humans (of course the piece was about the man and his dogs).

Possibly, the place to gather information on the effects of toxic fumes at the WTC site is NOT through the government or EPA, but from veterinarians who treated and still treat rescue dogs.

1. Interesting.
Obviously we need to look somewhere other than our own government for facts.

2. I Heard On The News
Where chemists analyzing the residue of the WTC collapse came across a molecule unknown to science. The building materials combined with the energy of the collapse to form a weird mixture including this new molecule.

Of course we didn't know about it. It would have made Dimbo look bad if no one in the area could get home; never mind the health and welfare of the people he "governs."

Well, he's hearing about it now and will again in 2004!

3. this was a topic on Bill Moyers PBS show last night.
not about the dogs but about the situation in general about the goverment lying about it. It was interesting to see Christie Todd Whitman talk out of both sides of her mouth. I never saw anybody who could speak and say absolutely nothing as well as she. She seems like a nice person but still..

That is too bad about the dogs. :(

4. Yes I feel bad for the dogs,
but the people, too! You hear little about health effects among the human rescuers and residents in the area. It just struck me like a bolt of lightning when they mentioned that TWO of his dogs died from the fumes. I wonder how many other dogs have died or have respiratory problems and how many of the human rescuers have died or have respiratory problems. I wonder if any study has taken place to find out. If it has, will be ever hear about it?

5. Most rescue participants knew in the back of their
minds that the World Trade Center enviroment was toxic. They felt a stronger desire to attend to the scene, motivated by obvious grief and anger, which facilitated the denial process. The tragedy is that the EPA knew from the get-go of the acute and fatal staus of the area. They chose to keep mum about it....The clean-up and the "hype" was more politically energizing.

Certainly we can all agree that avoiding an interruption in the wealth-making machine is far more important than saving the lives of our trained and experienced first response workers.

<sarcasm off>

it was a gross violation of medical procedures and a slap in the face to human compassion.

When Shrub stood on the rubble with the bullhorn and turned the moment into a political rally I had to puke.

The fact that RWers choose that moment as one of the Dauphin's finest is sheer madness.

Wake me up from this nightmare, somebody!
