W. Mark Felt , shown in Assoc of Former Intell Officers list
http://www.namebase.org/main4/W-Mark-Felt.html

Mr Felt has military intelligence background just like Bob Woodward ! Who'da thunk it. The military wanted Nixon out of office so bad with the navy especially. Pages 246-247 of Blind Man's Bluff: The Untold Story of American Submarine Espionage, by Sherry Sontag and Christopher/Annette Drew, shows us why:

"Kissinger had made a glaring mistake during arms negotiations that threatened to leave the Soviets with a dangerous lead in submarine-based ballistic missiles. In secret talks away from his military advisers, he had agreed, offhandedly, not to ask for limits on the Soviet's massive efforts to build the Deltas, a new class of submarines that would far surpass the Yankees and carry ballistic missiles with ranges of 4,000 miles. Zumwalt was furious, convinced that Nixon had given away the barn in their zeal to get SALT completed before the year's elections." (1972)

Also see http://www.watergate.com/stories/obit.asp

This link ends with the same speculation about Woodward's naval intelligence background. More reporters should ask Woodward about that...

1. A couple of thoughts:
<1> One of the Watergate burglars that the Nixon White House was willing to sacrifice was McCord. On page 23 of "All The President's Men," we find that McCord was a lieutenant colonial in a reserve unit of the Pentagon's Office of Emergency Preparedness. The OEP was in charge of "planning" to take care of those on lists as "radicals," to censor the media, and to censor the mail, in times of "war."

Now what was Felt convicted of? What did Reagan pardon him for?

<2> How could Woodward have been old friends with Felt, unless it was through his Navy officer days? When he was dealing in communications? On page 15 of "AtPM," we find that Berstein "thought that Woodward's rapid rise at the Post had less to do with his ability than his Establishment credentials." Also, same page: "Bernstein knew that Woodward couldn't write very well. One office rumor had it that English was not Woodward's native language."

More to the picture than meets the eye.

2. H2O Man, you're too darn good ! Felt pardoned 1981
"W. Mark Felt and Edward Miller (Reagan, 1981; clemency for authorizing FBI agents to break into Vietnam protestors' offices without warrants) "

Shortcut to: http://jurist.law.pitt.edu/pardons6.htm

Hmmm. Nixon would have loved that ! The irony of it all is just too much. Now why do you suppose the M$M is avoiding this little bit of turnaboutisfairplay ?

Giant cover up operation to preserve Woodward's vast expanse of exposed posterior, IMHO.

3. It is clear that "DeepThroat"
provided information to Woodward that Felt alone could not have had access to in his role at the FBI. Some in the media are picking up on this. The only two choices are that the character is a composit, or that Woodward himself was involved in a higher level of intelligence than many suspect. (Of course, a combination of the two is very likely.)

Very few Navy officers who specialize in communications aren't "good writers." I've come to think that some are so good, that they get White House passes.

4. Robert F. Bennett, head of the Mullen & Co. CIA front company
testified that he was Woodward's source before Congress...and no one questions him further today, why is that ? Could be that this CIA employee is now a member of Congress (senator R-UT) now !

5. I'm surprised this thread
hasn't received more attention. It is what I think is the most important part of the story.

From "All the President's Men":

page 31: "An attorney in Washington had said he could positively identify Frank Sturgis as one of the several men who attacked Pentagon Papers defendent Daniel Ellsberg outside a memorial service for the late FBI director J. Edgar Hoover in May." That Frank! He sure got around!

72-2: "The White house, he (Deep Throat) had said at the last meeting, regarded the stakes in Watergate as much higher than anyone outside perceived. Even the FBI did not understand what was happening. The source had been deliberately vague about this, however, making veiled references to the CIA and national security which Woodward did not understand (sic)..."

90: "...(Robert) Mardian was head of the Internal Security Division of the Justice Department. It was the division in charge of government wiretapping."

112: "No dissatisfied FBI agent or CRP employee had ever come to Bernstein or Woodward offering information."

115: "Somewhere, Bernstein had been told that the CIA did that kind of thing abroad. He had heard it called Mindfuck, but the agency called it Black Operations."

10. Frank Sturgis' real surname was Fiorini before he had it changed...
The five Watergate burglars were:

Bernard L. Barker - a realtor from Miami, Florida. Former Central Intelligence Agency operative. Barker was said to have been involved in the Bay of Pigs incident in 1962.

Virgilio R. Gonzales - a locksmith from Miami, Florida. Gonzalez was a refugee from Cuba, following Castro's takeover.

James W. McCord - a security co-ordinator for the Republican National Committee and the Committee for the Re-election of the President. McCord was also a former FBI and CIA agent. He was dismissed from his RNC and CREEP positions the day after the break-in.

Eugenio R. Martinez - worked for Barker's Miami real estate firm. He had CIA connections and was an anti-Castro Cuban exile. Click here to read Martinez's account of the burglary.

Frank A. Sturgis - another associate of Barker from Miami, he also had CIA connections and involvement in anti-Castro activities. Sturgis worked as a CIA operative working in Castro's organization before Castro seized power. Sturgis/Fiorini left Cuba after the US turned down Castro's request for aid. Castro then asked the Soviet Union for help which they agreed to do. Sturgis was then active with the Cuban Task Force and the training of anti-Castro Cubans for the Bay of Pigs. He also knew Lee Harvey Oswald, who also had a CIA 201 Personnel File.

<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Sturgis>

Also connected to the Watergate burglaries were:

G. Gordon Liddy - from Washington, counsel to the Finance Committee to Re-elect the President, a former FBI agent, former Treasury official, and former member of the White House staff. During the investigation, Liddy refused to answer questions and was fired from his job.

E Howard Hunt Jr. - from Washington, a former White House consultant and CIA employee. Hunt was a writer of espionage novels and had worked on declassifying the Pentagon Papers. Hunt had also been involved as a recruiter in Miami for the Bay of Pigs.

By the way...none of the individuals mentioned above were former CIA operatives...they were still on the CIA payroll when Watergate took place.

14. H2O Man, can you give a few snippets of some info that BW claimed
came from DT that Mark Felt could not have possibly known?

15. Dean, Buchanan, and others
said that even in his position in the FBI, he would not have been able to tell Woodward some of the things happening within the White House itself. I'm re-reading "All the President's Men" and jotting down notes. I do not have quotes yet. But both Dean and Buchanan gave a couple examples on MSNBC yesterday. They had to do with the reaction of a small core group of Nixon men, and of course this is why a number of the republicans believe that Dean provided information to Woodward.

The one example that I did come across that was mentioned is found on pages 72-73. It reads, "The White House, he had said at the last meeting, regarded the stakes in Watergate as much higher than anyone outside perceived. Even the FBI did not understand what was happening." This indicates that Deep Throat knew what the small group was thinking, and clearly indicates the FBI "did not understand." Felt was, of course, at the top of the FBI. That creates a funny contradiction.

Also, as noted before, on page 112 the authors claim that "No dissatisfied FBI agent or CRP employee" ever came and offered them information.

17. Jim Hougan came to same conclusion in Secret Agenda
pages 284-290, that no high level FBI could possibly be DeepThroat under the criteria laid out by Woodward and Bernstein themselves. He even puts it in italics so you don't miss the point btw.

Hougan worked for the WashPost, and I think possibly still does. Wonder what he thinks of this !

18. Could the use of "agent" been a coy way of covering Felt by leaving
them room to say, well we didn't say "FBI Insert official title of Felt at the time"?

Also does the first scenario eliminate the possibility that Felt might be DT but John Dean was Even-Deeper Throat and was filling Felt in?

19. Yes on the first point.
It seems likely, though dishonest.

I don't think Dean was likely speaking to Felt. It is possible that he was communicating with Woodward.

There are hundreds, perhaps thousands, of Woodwards scattered throughout the captive mainstream media.

11. "every newspaper and college campus....."
Yes, the corporate media has long housed numerous people who are reporters and editors by legend. Few, I would suspect, have the connections and ability to access certain information than Mr. Woodward. Towards the end of "Imperial Hubris," the author speaks to Woodward's remarkable luck in this way. So few reporters are able to talk to an ex-CIA director while they are in a coma, too.

6. That's why they are called 'The Silent Service'
They don't talk about their operations. I was stationed on an intel ship in the 60's, had a CO named Felt. I wonder if they are related.

9. Is that YOU formercia ? CGCS was where we last met I think....
If so, the CIA's Alexander Butterfield, who disclosed the taping system, will be another hot topic. Where is Alexander BTW ? I'm also curious about Gordon Strachan, Haldeman's political lieutenant. He's a lawyer now in Park City UT. How he kept his law license and didn't end up in jail like the others begs the question 'was he CIA in the White House' too ?
