Now is the moment: DeLay found guilty

Dear MoveOn member,

House Majority Leader Tom DeLay's abuse of power has gotten worse and without urgent action he might get away with it. Last week a judge in Texas ruled that a political action committee formed by DeLay was guilty of violating state law by failing to report some $600,000 in corporate contributions that were used to sway Texas elections in 2002. Those 2002 elections were part of a power grab to redraw the congressional district lines in Texas in order to put more Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Tomorrow hundreds of MoveOn members will go to the offices of congressional Republicans and deliver petitions urging them to "Fire Tom DeLay" from his post as majority leader. Please take one minute right now to sign our petition before tomorrow's deadline so we have lots of signatures to deliver, increasing our impact.

DeLay has already been found guilty three times by the House ethics committee—this time a court has ruled on a fundraising organization he started. Despite these findings he is still in power—deciding which legislation the Congress considers and when.

We need an outpouring of public outrage about this corruption to end DeLay's abuse of power. Some 226 members of Congress have taken money from DeLay. Representatives who aren't beholden to DeLay fear his wrath. He has infamously punished his opponents and their constituents. But if we can show that the American people are fed up with DeLay it will embolden his rivals to push for him to leave power.

We're also going to demonstrate that representatives who continue to help shield DeLay pay a political price. Starting later this week, while members of Congress are still home on break, we'll run radio ads in congressional districts of close associates of DeLay who also are expected to have close elections in 2006. (Look for an e-mail on that tomorrow.)

If Republicans in Congress begin to understand they could lose their next election because of Tom DeLay's abuse of power there is a real chance we could score another win this year: getting Tom DeLay fired as House majority leader—the sort of big news that will make it clear what the Republican leaders in Congress have been up to.

...with hundreds of signatures to my Florida Representative, Bill Young, asking him to fire Tom DeLay. I understand there were somewhere in the neighborhood of 150 of these deliveries made to representatives all around the country today. Nice work!!
