It is time we are all coming up on renewals and they need us to support them. One of the best truth telling little papers to be had. Internet or hard copy. Please don't let them down!

When a long train of abuses and usurpations <...> evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government.": Thomas Jefferson, US Declaration of Independence

June 1, 2005

Hi:

Maybe you are just the people to begin to cover a very insistent impeachment chatter moving all over the internet. Thank you for your recent articles on Depleted Uranium. I have included another one, below, from the Occupied Iraq newspaper, Uruknet.

Here is some information I have collected which might be useful to you and such coverage would be very appreciated.

As you know, perhaps, DU, democraticunderground, has over 70,000 members who would LOVE to see you do something like this. Why not the best little paper in the country?

Here are some items for your consideration. This is, of course, an incomplete list.

Thank you for your hard work.

Sincerely,

Marsha Hammond, PHD

item 1: Articles of Impeachment from Veterans for Peace

http://www.veteransforpeace.org/impeachment/violations.doc

http://www.baltimorechronicle.com/033005VeteransForPeace.html
Laws violated by President George W. Bush, Vice-President Richard Cheney, public officials under their authority, and members of the U.S. military under their command, sufficient for impeachment

Veterans for Peace believes the following to be a partial, but sufficient, summary of relevant laws violated by President George W. Bush and Vice-President Richard Cheney, arising from their decision to invade and occupy Iraq, followed by documentation for each violation. Veterans for Peace will add additional violations to this summary as they are made known by eyewitness military personnel and other credible sources.
We believe these violations constitute impeachable offenses under the U.S. Constitution Article II, sec. 4, and that the U.S. Congress is therefore compelled to impeach President Bush and Vice-President Cheney.

item 2: 1 of 1st pick-ups on Downing Street Minutes

Arctic Beacon

By Greg Szymanski

The potentially damaging memo was leaked to the London
press this week, revealing an internal memo sent on July
23, 2002, by Matthew Rycroft, a former defense policy aide.
Rycroft addressed his concerns about America’s deceptive
“rush to war” to England’s heads of state, including the
Prime Minister, Defense secretary, Foreign Secretary and
Attorney General. ....

The memo, which has been verified as “Secret and Personal
For UK Eyes Only,” clearly shows the Bush administration
lied to the American people about its basis for going to
war in Iraq. To date over 1,700 American troops have been
killed in the fighting and estimates of over 100,000
innocent Iraqi civilians have also perished.

item 3: "Facts were Fixed"

IMPEACHMENT TIME: "FACTS WERE FIXED."
Special to BuzzFlash
Thursday, May 5, 2005
By Greg Palast

The memo, uncovered this week by the Times, goes on to describe an elaborate plan by George Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair to hoodwink the planet into supporting an attack on Iraq knowing full well the evidence for war was a phony.
A conspiracy to commit serial fraud is, under federal law, racketeering. However, the Mob's schemes never cost so many lives.
Here's more. "Bush had made up his mind to take military action. But the case was thin. Saddam was not threatening his neighbors, and his WMD capability was less than that of Libya, North Korea or Iran."
Really? But Mr. Bush told us, "Intelligence gathered by this and other governments leaves no doubt that the Iraq regime continues to possess and conceal some of the most lethal weapons ever devised."

item 4: Genocide is being committed:

Horror of US Depleted Uranium in Iraq Threatens World

American Use Of DU is "A crime against humanity which may, in the eyes of historians, rank with the worst atrocities of all time." US Iraq Military Vets "are on DU death row, waiting to die."

item 5:

'Iraq was Invaded to Secure Israel,' says Senator Hollings, and
'Everybody Knows It.'
By Mark Weber
July 16, 2004
excerpt:
" I , will challenge any one of the other 99 Senators to tell us why we are in Iraq, other than what this policy is here. It is an adopted policy, a domino theory of The Project For The New American Century. Everybody knows it because we want to secure our friend, Israel..."

item 6: www.votetoimpeach.org

Wolfowitz’s Admission Should Cause Impeachment
A number of recent revelations confirm that the Administration knowingly lied about the war and its causes. From their own mouths we know with certainty that they cooked up an explanation for the war that would most scare people - the facts be damned. Paul Wolfowitz, Rumsfeld’s key aide, was quoted in Vanity Fair magazine as saying, "For bureaucratic reasons we settled on one issue, weapons of mass destruction, because it was the one reason everyone could agree on." Since the Administration was flooded with angry letters, undoubtedly many from families of U.S. soldiers, following the publication of the Wolfowitz interview, the Pentagon attempted to do damage control, asserting that he was misquoted. But that didn't help much either. The Pentagon’s own version of the interview has Wolfowitz saying: "The truth is that for reasons that have a lot to do with the U.S. government bureaucracy, we settled on the one issue that everyone could agree on which was weapons of mass destruction as the core reason."

item 7: Ralph Nader:

"American's Right to Know War NewsRalph Nader, CommonDreams.org
Sunday, May 15, 2005 - An astonishing message came forth on May 12, 2005 from ABC News political unit's The Note. I shall quote verbatim from Mark Halperin and his associate editors: "We say with all the genuine apolitical and non-partisan human concern that we can muster that the death and carnage in Iraq is truly staggering. And/but we are sort of resigned to the Notion that it simply isn't going to break through to American news organizations, or, for the most part, Americans."

....And what about the first President in U.S. history deliberately lowballing U.S. casualties so as not to further arouse public opposition to his war crimes. American men and women injured, sickened or severely mentally traumatized in Iraq, but not in actual combat, are not counted in the casualty toll. Tens of thousands not counted disrespecting them and their parents.....

item 8: Use of Depleted Uranium on troops and Iraqis: (by the way, thanks for your articles on 'what is depleted uranium': http://www.iconoclast-texas.com/News/19news02.htm
and depleted uraium bill info:
a. children born w/o eyes: Occupied Iraq newspaper: http://www.uruknet.info/?s1=1&p=11727&s2=14

The Pentagon's Secret Stash
Why we'll never see the second round of Abu Ghraib photos
Matt Welch

The images, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld told Congress, depict "acts that can only be described as blatantly sadistic, cruel, and inhuman." After Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.) viewed some of them in a classified briefing, he testified that his "stomach gave out." NBC News reported that they show "American soldiers beating one prisoner almost to death, apparently raping a female prisoner, acting inappropriately with a dead body, and taping Iraqi guards raping young boys." Everyone who saw the photographs and videos seemed to shudder openly when contemplating what the reaction would be when they eventually were made public.

Posted on Fri, Mar. 11, 2005 Some Abu Ghraib prisoners 'ghosted'

BY JOSH WHITE

Washington Post

WASHINGTON — Top military intelligence officials at the Abu Ghraib prison came to an agreement with the CIA to hide certain detainees at the facility without officially registering them, according to documents obtained by the Washington Post. Keeping such "ghost" detainees is a violation of international law.

FBI E-Mail Refers to Presidential Order
Authorizing Inhumane Interrogation Techniques
American Civil Liberties Union
Monday 20 December 2004
Newly obtained FBI records call Defense Department's methods "torture," express concerns over "cover-up" that may leave FBI "holding the bag" for abuses.
NEW YORK - A document released for the first time today by the American Civil Liberties Union suggests that President Bush issued an Executive Order authorizing the use of inhumane interrogation methods against detainees in Iraq. Also released by the ACLU today are a slew of other records including a December 2003 FBI e- mail that characterizes methods used by the Defense Department as "torture" and a June 2004 "Urgent Report" to the Director of the FBI that raises concerns that abuse of detainees is being covered up.
"These documents raise grave questions about where the blame for widespread detainee abuse ultimately rests," said ACLU Executive Director Anthony D. Romero. "Top government officials can no longer hide from public scrutiny by pointing the finger at a few low-ranking soldiers."

Dear Chom, you've been around a while, but I'm here in Texas, I've talked with the office today, with the manager, what more do you want? PayPal is so not necessary! Why? I, in my very humble opinion believe it is deserving. Can we all not support in some small way this truth teller?

I'm going for 1/4 page unless du'ers step up?

There are a few, but are there not many? I'm confused and lost. Where are all my friends? It is time to step up and support a 4th estate journalist/publisher.

No ifs, no ands, no buts!

51. Maybe a New Thread
Maybe starting a new thread with a subject heading relevant to the ad buy would get more response. I think it's a good idea, I'm juts very short on extra funds right now. I did re up my subscription to the paper though.

Good Luck

62. I've been here awhile
I've been here for at least 2 years. I lurked for a long time before I got an account over a year ago. I mostly just use the Latest Breaking News feed for information and post very little. I have been a loyal Mike Malloy listener and he swears by DU so I make sure I visit here daily to get the real news.

Good Luck with the ad buy. The Iconoclast is a damn good paper. I enjoy reading it.

65. ad contribution
I'm a lurker. Been lurking here for some time now and thank you all for your wonderful posts! I have learned so much from you all!! The biggest thing I have gained is the ability to articulate to those in my day to day life my position on particular issues that are important to me. In my past I was a wallflower. Now I speak my mind (and know what the h*** I'm talking about!)
This seems like such a great idea to me and I would be happy to contribute to this cause - I could swing about $50 . Paypal or snail mail, contact me. :)

Here is the response I've sent to everyone:

Okay_I'm sending this to everyone that has pm'ed me tonight. I spoke with the staff at the paper this afternoon. What I would like to have happen is let us all make our donations for the ad to the paper. They can take payment over the internet or on the phone, at the office (yes, Virginia, real people, answering real phones, in a real office). The staff are a lot of fun to talk with and they all appreciate hearing from us!

I think we should all contribute what we can asap and let's just see what we can come up with and work with Leon at the Icononclast to make it happen! ASAP!!

Subscribe one and all, give gift subs (it is lots of fun), and if you want to be in on the ad buy just give a call to the paper or pm me.

I'll be talking with the paper in the morning to set it up. No dollars at all come through me.

Thanks all and Love you Skinner and all the rest for giving us this wonderful forum!

to be certain that this is okay? DU is our schoolyard, but he's the 'daddy' so to speak! You know what I mean, we should be sure it's alright to use the name in the ad?

This is an excellent idea, I would love to see it expanded & used regularly in other papers too!

78. Truthout.org talked to this paper..
and they said that their circulation action went UP after they came out in support of John Kerry in Crawford Texas. Certainly many in the city began to shun them, but they're doing ok.

80. I read a recent article,
maybe a month or two ago, in which the editor said he was getting pretty worried. They were still paying their bills, but their Crawford advertising and subscriptions had basically dried up and he wasn't sure how much longer they'd be able to keep publishing, although it sounded like they were pretty determined to do their best.

Unfortunately I can't find a link to that article, darn it, but let's revisit their endorsement of Kerry and repudiation of Bush. It's a beautiful thing:

I was going to charge $$ on my credit card but she was reluctant to accept it since it's unclear what type of ad DUers are buying.

On edit: She just called me back and said DUers are giving what they can and Sh____ will handle the rest. TY I'm in for $20.
