My experience at the county convention tonight. |
|
Edited on Thu Jun-02-05 12:13 AM by Bleachers7
So I went to my county convention tonight. I was helping a DA candidate challenger. She is a Democrat and originally picked by the party to run. Then some stuff happened and she was dropped. The party decided to run a republican from Philadelphia instead. The repub has not changed parties yet according to the law.
There is a law in NY that says that a 50% of the committee people must be present and a majority has to vote to designate someone not officially in the Democratic party. This was the third thing on the agenda. It was moved up to the first. I believed that the 50% quorum was not there in person so I made a point of order saying there wasn't a quorum. The chair said I was overruled and there was a quorum. I appealed. I was overruled again. The gavel came down a few times and I was told that I was out of order.
It was an interesting experience. I am proud of myself for standing up and fighting for it. I know it might upset some people at the party, but that's how it goes.
Anyone else here ever try to take on a chair at an organized meeting? What do you think.

Doesn't sound like there is a democratic party there. We (LA) had the party switcher, Rodney Alexander, and the dem ticket STILL SEEMED to support him. The TRUE democrats are in the same boat as y'all are. WTF!!
here's what were trying to do about it www.beaucoupblues.com

3. That is why I'm Independant |

I trust no parties. Tell the Dems to fight for America or the Taliban. Which is true.

4. Call your board of elections |
|
and the state party chair (I know you're in NY; I don't have the number handy).
Depending on how big your county is and the party affiliation of the election commissioner, you might get a quicker response going that route. But the state chair also needs to know what's going on. A cc to Howard Dean is also not a bad idea.
Don't let this go by without taking it further. You did good. You can also walk petitions for the challenger with the aim of forcing a primary.
PM me if you want more info on BOE shit.
Good luck!

5. As someone who was employed by a state party, I can tell you |
|
that it is very unlikely that they will get involved in this type of dispute. State parties will usually let the locals fight it out, unless there are some serious problems (such as malfeasance of money).

7. The board is controlled by party people. |
|
I took my shot last night. I think it was worth it. Some people believe that it's not OK to say something. Others, including myself blieve that there's no point on having a convention if there is going to be a rubber stanp.
