The Deep Throat story takes us back to a more innocent time, when there was such a thing as accountability for presidents who lie and deceive the public. The Downing Street memo, which shows the White House was determined to invade Iraq regardless of the facts, has been public knowledge for weeks. The military's own reports say that abuse at Abu Ghraib was a matter of policy, yet Donald Rumsfeld says they don't and it wasn't.
There is no need for a Deep Throat on these stories; everything has been revealed. Yet there is no Watergate Committee, no Archibald Cox or Judge Sirica. Our leaders create their own reality, a tissue of lies, and those of us in the "reality-based community" can only gnash our teeth at their audacity.
