Peter Brimelow writes about modern immigration trends in his book, "Alien Nation: Common Sense About America's Immigration Disaster." Mr. Brimelow argues that legislation passed in 1965 has resulted in negative trends in immigration in the United States, including an influx of immigrants that he says in engulfing America. The author says that the latest immigration wave consists of immigrants who are less educated, less skilled, and less likely to share American ideals, which he argues is a detriment to American culture.

Author Bio: Peter Brimelow has written for MacLean's, Financial Post, Fortune, and Barron's as well as serving as senior editor of Forbes and National Review. He is also the author of "The Worm in the Apple: How the Teacher Unions are Destroying American Education" and "The Patriot Game: Canada and Canadian Questions Revisited." Mr. Brimelow currently serves as president of the Center for American Unity.

Author Bio: David Reynolds is Distinguished Professor of English and American Studies at the Graduate Center and Baruch College of the City University of New York. He is the author of "Walt Whitman's America," and "Beneath the American Renaissance."

Greg Perry

Greg Perry writes that the Americans with Disabilities Act has done more to harm the handicapped than to help them. The author tells his own story of being born with only three deformed fingers and one leg and how his parents refused to allow those physical defects to set him back personally or professionally. He relates his own story to that of the handicapped in America and how they're affected by the ADA. The author makes the case by saying that the quality of life for the disabled has not improved since the ADA went into effect and it has restricted the freedoms of all citizens through strict regulations, lawsuits, and restricted economic growth. He talked about this at the Freedom Fest in Las Vegas during a presentation on his book, "Disabling America: The Unintended Consequences of the Government's Protection of the Handicapped."

Author Bio: Greg Perry is the author of more than 75 books on computer systems and computer programming.

Author Ron Kovic celebrates the paperback release of his book, "Born on the 4th of July," with Los Angeles Times columnist Robert Scheer, and Johnny Temple, editor-in-chief of Akashic Books. Mr. Kovic discusses how he was affected by the Vietnam War including his paralysis from his chest down as a result of combat. The panelists also compare the Vietnam War to the current war in Iraq. This event was hosted by the 2005 Los Angeles Festival of Books.

Author Bio: Ron Kovic is a Vietnam veteran, former Marine Corps sergeant and author of "Born on the 4th of July." The Acadamy Award-winning film "Born on the 4th of July," is based on the life of Mr. Kovic.

Jay Feldman gives a history of the New Madrid, Missouri earthquakes in his book "When the Mississippi Ran Backwards." Beginning in 1811, a series of earthquakes struck the lower Ohio and mid-Mississippi valleys destroying towns as well as the chimney of slaveowner Lilburne Lewis, Thomas Jefferson's newphew, exposing the remains of a slave he murdered. Mr. Feldman entertains questions from the audience after his presentation. This event is hosted by Left Bank Books in St. Louis, Missouri and the Missouri History Museum.

Author Bio: Jay Feldman is a musician and freelance writer. His work has appeared in Smithsonian Magazine, Newsweek, Sports Illustrated, and The New York Times. He has written for film and television and is the author of "Hitting: An Official Major League Baseball Book."

During this event at the Hudson Institute, a panel of friends and colleagues who were inspired by Menges' work talk about Menges and the arguments he makes in his book concerning the economic and military threat posed by China. Joining the discussion are: Bill Gertz of the Washington Times, William Hawkins of the U.S. Business and Industry Council, Al Santoli of the Asia America Initiative, and Michael Pillsbury, author of "China Debates the Future Security Environment." Constantine Menges' wife, Nancy Menges, makes opening remarks and Hudson Institute president Herbert London moderates the discussion. Includes Q&A.

Author Bio: Constantine Menges, former CIA national intelligence officer and former special assistant to President Reagan for national security affairs, was a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute. He was a central planner for the 1983 invasion of Grenada. He authored several books, including "Inside the National Security Council: The True Story of the Making and Unmaking of Reagan's Foreign Policy" and "The Twilight Struggle: The Soviet Union v. the United States Today."

In it, the authors make the case that democratic development is superior to an autocratic government in measureable fields like life expectancy, quality of life, international relations, and education for all. The authors also discuss how autocracies have been surpassed by the success of democracies over the last forty years.

Author Bio: Joseph Siegle is an associate director at the Center for Institutional Reform and the Informal Sector at the University of Maryland. Michael Weinstein has been an economics columnist for the New York Times, chairman of the Economics department at Haverford College, and now serves as director of programs at the Robin Hood Foundation.

Manhattan Institute fellow Steven Malanga says that the newest movement in liberal politics has rolled back reforms in major cities like New York, loses money at an alarming rate, and hurts the people it attempts to help. It does so through unions petitioning for living-wage laws (which he says drive businesses elsewhere) and instituting government reforms that established by those who stand to gain the most from those reforms. In "The New New Left: How American Politics Works Today" Mr. Malanga outlines the ways in which the New Left has strayed from the visions of the New Left of the 1960s and how it continues to gain strength within the national Democratic Party.

Author Bio: Steven Malanga was executive editor of Crain's New York Business and was a finalist for the Gerald Loeb Award for Excellence in Financial Journalism. He is a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute and a contributing editor to the City Journal where he specializes in urban economies, business communities, and public policy.

That's the case made by New York Times assistant managing editor Craig Whitney in his book, "The WMD Mirage: Iraq's Decade of Deception and America's False Premise for War." Mr. Whitney talks about his book at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York City and is joined in the discussion by Patricia Wald, Commissioner of the Committee on the Intelligence Capabilities of the U.S. Regarding Weapons of Mass Destruction; and Charles Duelfer, former head of the Iraq Survey Group. The panelists talk about the failures of the American intelligence community as well as the current state of WMD in Iraq.

Author Bio: Craig Whitney is assistant managing editor of the New York Times and the editor of "The WMD Mirage: Iraq's Decade of Deception and America's False Premise for War." He has worked for the New York Times as a reporter, European diplomatic correspondent, and foreign editor. Judge Patricia Wald served as assistant U.S. attorney general for legislative affairs during much of the Carter administration, on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit in 1979, and was chief judge of the court from 1986 to 1991. She was appointed to the Federal Appeals Court and after retiring from the court in 1999, she spent two years in The Hague as a judge of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. Charles Duelfer is a former head of the State Department's Center for Defense Trade, former Deputy head of the UNSCOM weapons inspection agency in Iraq, and in January 2004 he replaced David Kay as the leader of the Iraq Survey Group.

Dr. Collins begins his memoir during the first year of residency and ends it during his term as chief resident of the clinic. He also explains the lessons his patients taught him throughout his medical career.

Author Bio: Michael Collins served as Chief Resident in Orthopedic Surgery at the Mayo Clinic. He is a partner in a surgical practice in Chicago and the father of twelve children.

After analyzing data from Chicago drug-dealing gangs, he concludes that their corporate structure is similar to that of McDonald's, where the salaries range from a six-figure income to below minimum wage. This event was hosted by Politics and Prose Bookstore in Washington, DC.

Author Bio: Steven Levitt teaches economics at the University of Chicago and was recently awarded the John Bates Clark Medal, awarded every two years to the best American economist under forty.

Michael Cannon, Jr., former brigade chaplain for the 800th MP Brigade in Iraq, talks about the people involved in the Abu Ghraib prison scandal and the media coverage the scandal has received. Mr. Cannon argues that what happened at Abu Ghraib is a reflection of the decline in ethics within American society as a whole. He says that the media has presented a very narrow picture of what happened at the prison and has thus effectively mislead the public into thinking that the problem lies within the military or with President Bush. Mr. Cannon also talks about the recent decision in the Lyndie England trial and the overall war in Iraq. The talk was hosted by the Boiling Springs First Baptist Church in South Carolina. Includes Q&A.

Author Bio: Michael Cannon, Jr. is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church of America and has served in the military for over 20 years. Mr. Cannon served as brigade chaplain for the 800th Military Police Brigade in 2003. Part of the brigade at that time was assigned to guard Iraqi detainees at Abu Ghraib prison.

There's always at least one show that's well worth watching. Sometimes I don't bother to go to the C-Span site to check the schedule though.

There's probably been over a dozen books in the last year that I've HAD to read after seeing the author talk about them on Book TV. :)
