What do you call being put out of a Job by advancing Technology?
The constantly improving Digital Cameras has put me in a "got to find a new line of work (Job) situation," but what would you call that?

6. Walt Disney promised us that in 1966
Other Disney predictions that have failed to materialize as promised:

- 30-hour work week

- nuclear-powered automobiles

- paperless office

- picture phones (well, kind of)

...in the Cover Letter that I'm writing, to describe why I'm un-employed or why I lost my last job?

5. I call it crap.
Take parking lot fee collectors. They're put out of a job everytime a mall or other such venue replaces live people with those machines where you take your ticket in with you and pay your parking fee at a kiosk as you leave the mall. Then all you do is shove your ticket into the slot and the arm opens.

Those people had jobs. Then they lost them. Like you. I'm sorry. It sucks. I wish I had an answer.

32. My last job (last 4 actually) was Loading/downloading Professional
"Slide" film (and Large format too), but now that the Digital cameras are getting better and less expensive, Professional Photographers are shooting less and less actual "Camera" film. It wasn't just that, but that's what keeping my job depended on.

Plus, my last Boss (small business owner) was one of those "clueless Republican" guys who would tell anyone that asked, "Oh no, Digital will never be as good as actual Film, Photographers will always shoot film."

I knew differently, my previous job was shooting "Large Format" Digital, the place was on the leading edge of the Industry, but the fall in the price of the "Power Mac" and the rise of Photo Shop, cut the work load at that place, so I got laid off.

Then, I went to work for a Lab that was about 10 years behind the curve (and at least 15 years behind where I had just worked). So that was good for a few more years, but eventually the quality that the $25,000 camera that I had been using, could be achieved with a $600.00 Nikon Camera. Business dropped off quickly once the $1000.00 barrier was breached.

So, again I was laid off, but this time, my time in the Digital "No-Go" zone left me about 5 years behind the curve, as far as skills go.

Their is more, but I have to get back to work on my cover letter.

Edited on Fri Jun-03-05 07:39 PM by Cleita
that your skills are no longer needed. This happens. I learned shorthand and that got replaced dictating machines and eventually computers.

You'd better find another field, which also could become obsolete. You have to keep adapting. It's a drag but if you need to work, it's a necessity.

10. Congratulations on becoming superfluous
Farmers in the 30s were "tractored" off their lands by banks that foreclosed and sold to conglomerates. Stevedores were put out of jobs by container shipping.

You're just the latest casualty in the march of technology.

At least you didn't have to train a replacement worker in India.

11. I would call it an opportunity
to re-educate or re-train yourself for the next career. Never assume that what you are doing today for a living is what you will be doing a month, a year, or in my case, twenty-four years at the same employer. Just think of the people that used to make wooden wagon wheels; I bet they made the same noises about technology replacing them.

30. I live in the real world
and in the current worldwide economic situation as regarding employment, you must be adaptable or you will be road-kill. That is harsh, but a sad fact. Change or die, adapt or go extinct; that is the Darwinian economic climate that we find ourselves in. We are rapidly becoming a post-industrial economy, and the changes will be painful.

see my re 's on down the thread fo rdetails on how the stress need not be.

not at all.

accept no pain in the job world.

retrain sure, but you should be paid during that, and guaranteed a job at the end of retraining in new tech.

job gaps with no pay are ridiculous.

accept no pain.

33. We already ARE a post-industrial economy.
Your half-baked theory assumes that someone halfway around the world DOESN'T have access to universities, CAN'T pick up the same knowledge that Americans can and WON'T work for 1/10th the price because he can and I cannot due to our comparative cost of living expenses. All of the training in the world isn't going to amount to bupkis as long as someone can do that same job cheaper.

Edited on Fri Jun-03-05 12:57 PM by oscar111
at least, that is what technology makes POSSIBLE.

when rational folks run the economy.

1O9 Trillion is our national wealth... fed reserve site, table L 5.

self-repairing robots from robot-run iron mines and robot factories, can free us all for a life of play.

Already, mechanized factories plus a bit of human labor, give us 1O9 Trillion for national wealth.

26. Shorter work week is only result, when
Edited on Fri Jun-03-05 01:11 PM by oscar111
all are guaranteed a job.

see my sig, JFA site.

true, even with guaranteed jobs, and zero worry about any gaps in paychecks...

one still has to adjust to new technology at the next job.

but there absolutely need not be any big stress as a result of tech forcing one to adjust to new tech.

New tech should only result in up-training with pay, then guaranteed placement in a new-tech job.. and NO pay gaps.

Result: NO STRESS

SEE my sig, NJFA site

New tech should be constantly shortening our work week {with same pay} because new tech is more productive.... till the day robots do ALL the work, and our work week is zero.

29. boss..LOL. Naw, you can't. Never.
Edited on Fri Jun-03-05 01:46 PM by oscar111
no fun in my world LOL.

in serious vein now, .. incompetent folks just get demoted, never fired.

demoted to whatever is fitting... perhaps parking lot trash cleaner, for real turkeys.

but no firing. Everyone needs an income, or else you will have crime like you see it today.

street cvrime is the result of 14 million job shortage. see my sig.

other kinds of crime have other causes.. but the worst kind, streeet crime, is due to Job Shortage.. and easily ended with JFA jobs for all.

Galbraith advises this site, so it is a very serious site. Clinton's Sec of Labor, Reich, is also an advisor.
tons of other academics also are advisors, with the archbishop of Milwaukee and two Nobel Laureates.
See the site's button Uncommon Sense for factsheets.

JS is also the main cause of poverty. Total employment would end most homelessness and hunger.

SUMMARY:
--end poverty
and end crime
and end your own stress by ending payless job breaks. {replace with paid re-training, and the knowledge that after retraining, a guaranteed job will be there for you. Lifetime guarantee of SOME job, no breaks ever. Like sweden, womb to tomb security.}

What could be better?

Sweden kept joblessness below one percent for decades, .. till the RW lied its way into power. So four percent in any nation is NOT "full employment". Amazing lie. How can anyone fall for such a whopper?

Your take on the Job market sounds like that of the Italians.

When I when to Italy a few years ago, they had Stopped checking Passports on the Highway, but instead of firing the people, they made them Toll takers.

But the distance between the Toll Ticket booth and the Toll Collector booth was about 400 meters (the length of the off-ramp).
