Are non-white or ugly white women safer than pretty white women?
One could certainly come to that conclusion if one were to only get one's news from the corporate media. White women and white girls seem to be the only ones facing danger in today's world. Has *everything* changed since 9/11?

Aruba police and Dutch military are leading the search for Natalee Holloway.

I wish this young woman no harm. I have an 18 year old pretty white step-daughter and she's the world to me.

But as we listen to the news, you'd think non-white women, or unattractive white women were ever more safe than the endangered 'pretty white woman'.

The media sucks. They.just.suck.

Either that or this is just unintended (or intended?) racism.

Hey mediamotherfuckers ...........

Up Yours

5. You don't hear about it
I have seen several late night news stories about little black girls that have disappeared. No National Alert, No "Hurry! We have to save the girl", nothing compared to a white girl missing.

I'm a white guy and I find this disgusting, and yes, it is racism.

16. It certainly is racism
Just like how they do with burglaries and murder. It's either the "poor white guy who lost his girlfriend" or something or the "poor black guy who was desperate" or whatever. It's the typical racism sterotype. Why don't they have a public funded station where they can just report any person who is missing? An "Amber Alert" station?? That way the "news" can go back to bring "news."

Unfortunately I believe the consumers AND media are at fault for this double standard. On one hand, the media hurls propaganda at us on how to think, look, dress, and what to say...etc. Therefore, the media share fault with consumers as well.

12. There were lots of tittie shots in the Central Park story
Only blood and guts in Chicago.

If it bleeds, it leads. Unless there's a pretty young white girl missing. You'll get the male audience to tune in, just cuz she's a pretty white girl. In the islands. Mmm. You'll get the female audience tuning in because of some of the above, plus the whole maternal thing thrown in there. It's a natural...they draw in everybody with a pretty white girl story. A black girl gets killed in the big city? That's news?

Piffle! :sarcasm:

20. I remember hearing
about the black woman also but there was very little coverage of her case. Also, I believe it was when Elizabeth Smart went missing that a black child in Wisconsin also disappeared. Almost no coverage of her case by the media, either. I think she is still missing.

23. In 2002, 48.1% of murder victims were white and 47.9% were black
Edited on Fri Jun-03-05 04:02 PM by ultraist
But of course, we saw mostly white faces of victims being reported on in the MSM.

stats:
http://encarta.msn.com/media_701500202/Age_Sex_and_Race_of_Murder_Victims_in_the_United_States.

And of course, more often than not, when we see Blacks being reported on in the media, they are perpetrators. Gotta keep that negative stereotype alive!

snips
http://www.fair.org/articles/racism-media.html

A more important consequence is the narrow, distorting lens through which racial minorities are frequently portrayed in mainstream news. Studies commissioned by the National Association of Hispanic Journalists have found that only about 1 percent of the 12,000 stories aired yearly on the three network TV evening newscasts focus on Latinos or Latino issues -- and roughly 80 percent of these stories "portray Latinos negatively," often on subjects like crime, drugs and "illegal" immigrants.

Kirk Johnson's classic study (Columbia Journalism Review, May/June 1987) of 30 days worth of coverage of Boston's two largely black neighborhoods found that mainstream media focused overwhelmingly on lights-and-sirens stories involving some "pathology" -- to borrow a term journalists love to apply to reports about black and Latino communities -- such as violent crime or drugs, and "85 percent reinforced negative stereotypes of blacks."

The flip side of media's overrepresentation of minorities as criminals and druggies is their underrepresentation as experts and analysts. FAIR's studies in the late 1980s and early 1990s documented not only the incredible whiteness of being an expert in national media (92 percent of Nightline's U.S. guests were white; 90 percent of the PBS NewsHour's were white; 26 of 27 repeat commentators on National Public Radio during a four-month study were white) but a tendency to ghettoize minority experts into discussions of "black" or "brown" issues…often those "pathologies" again.

For Americans still inhabiting largely segregated workplaces and neighborhoods (some as segregated as prime-time TV sitcoms), the media are the main sources of information about people of other racial groups and therefore deserve a share of the blame for the prevalence of racist attitudes. In 1990, a National Opinion Research Center survey found that 53 percent of nonblack respondents said that African-Americans were less intelligent than whites, 56 percent said they were more violence prone, 62 percent said they were lazier, and 78 percent said they were more likely to "prefer to live off welfare." Majorities of respondents expressed similar views about Latinos, and significant numbers attributed these traits to Asian-Americans.

24. And if you rewight that stat based on their respective
percentages of the population, people of color are far, far, far more likely to be murder victims.

But, since this is a white 'christian' country, there's no need to report on that. :sarcasm:

Funny thing, it took more than three years and change for the identity of the suspects to come to light.

Oddly enough, Fox and CNN and MSNBC weren't delivering breathless commentary day and night from the crime scene here, or dogging cops and prosecutors, either. I wonder why . . . :eyes:

41. Precious Doe? I only know about it because I lived in Overland Park, KS
Edited on Fri Jun-03-05 11:11 PM by Pirate Smile
a couple years ago. I don't live there anymore.

My Mom was telling me about how she died and how her life was before she was killed from the Kansas City Star article. So horrific. It is absolutely heartbreaking.

I think it got national media play for one day when they finally discovered who she was.

OMG. I did a search for the article and I see this was in the paper today:

"The tipster who provided key information in the Precious Doe murder investigation called police 50 times starting last year, Kansas City police acknowledged Thursday. Police said they were looking at ways to avoid such missed opportunities in the future."

Here is the article about what happened to her and here is her photo:

Precious Doe lay unconscious for 10 hours, dying from a head injury, because the two people entrusted with her care feared taking her to a hospital, court records say.

Her real name was Erica Michelle Marie Green.

She was just weeks shy of her fourth birthday when those two adults — her mother and the mother's then-boyfriend — allegedly dumped her decapitated body in Kansas City woods in April 2001. Police searching for a man reported missing found the nude body. Searches found the head later.

http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/news/11574198.htm

That article doesn't have the details of her life before she died. That was the heartbreaking part.

27. Nice to know I can walk the streets safely.
Somebody tried to kidnap my brother when he was three. I was only 18 months old so I don't remember the incident. Our mom took us to the grocery store and as she was leaving she noticed she was overcharged so she went to the customer service desk. I was in one of those baby backpack things and she held his hand but she let go to show the receipt to the cashier. While talking with them she realized she hadn't heard him for a minute which was (and still is) very odd for him. She quickly went to the door and saw a man walking out with him. When she asked WTF? he was doing with her son he let go and ran.

Of course something like that would never happen today because a) he's not white, b) he's not a woman, and c) young boys only have to worry about priests.

much media interest. That's true. In my area they are pretty equal opportunity about ethnicity, when women become victims. It's true though that the white girl gets the coast to coast coverage like Laci Peterson and Chandra Levy.

I'm really suspicious, though, about Chandra. Was she murdered to frame Congressman, Gary Condit and get him replaced by a Republican?

32. Local conservative talk radio had this as a topic this AM.
Russ and Dee Fine, two hosts who are largely ultra-conservative on most issues, agreed that the nationwide coverage was entirely due to her looks and her socio-economic background. They conceded that if it were a black girl from Birmingham or a white girl from a working or middle class suburb it would be local news only. We all hope for the best for her, but we honestly fear the worst.
