Since Bush has become president, I've learned more about the Constitution, American History, the filibuster, separation of church and state, and the separation of powers than I ever learned in school.

3. I also learned to never trust the government,

that all wars bring about great evil, even if supposedly fought for a good reason, and that the public is so desperate for a leader with conviction who communicates a simple message that they'll even vote for a crook who fakes it.

4. They used to actually teach those things in school.

They called it Civics. Literally, how to be a citizen.

As you undoubtedly realize, "democracy" is not a spectator activity and the enlightened individuals who wrote our Declaration of Independence and Constitution knew that, well.

I never realized what a true work of genius the Constitution is. I had read it and understood it but until Bush became president I had taken my citizenship for granted. Not anymore...
