Poll question: Koran abuse: Which is worse?
In the media..... MSNBC moments ago it was just stated that an investigation into Koran abuse that was brought on by the Newsweek story found that there were indeed abuses of the Muslim Holy Book but that none of them reached the level of flushing a Koran down the toilet....

I'm sorry I find splattering a person and his Koran with urine to be a bit MORE offensive than flushing the book.... you know... by them... that's okay (WTF?)

What are your thoughts?

3. Holy books
I don't give into the idea of reveled books but why mistreat an object? If they don't like the Koran, don't read it. No excuse to abuse it. To me, books are next to sacred.

12. So would you support legislation...
criminalizing the "desecration" of "Holy Books"?

Somehow, I don't think that's going to fly...

5. Notice how the M$M has ignored STEPPING on the Koran?
Remember, touching it with the sole of one's shoe or boot is an EXTREME insult in Arab/Islamic culture. Even exposing the sole of your shoe to your host is insulting.

9. Who knows?
Maybe the people over at MSM are big fans of watersports (and I'm not talking waterskiing here, wink wink).

Seriously, as I've stated before I understand that some people take their holy books very seriously, and I treasure books but come on....they are just printed paper bound together. Books can be replaced. People cannot.

The abuses of human beings is far more serious than damage caused to any property, no matter how "sacred" that property may be considered.

10. IMO someone should be able to do whatever they want to thier own property
If I own a Koran, Bible, or American Flag I should be able to do whatever I want to it. It is my property.

the human abuses are the worst. What difference does it make if we flushed a few Korans? There are pics and video of us torturing prisoners. Our guys will pin electrodes to a guys privates and flip the switch, but NOOOO we would NEVER flush a Koran. WTF dif does it make once we have completely degraded their humanity?

I don't even understand the RW spin these days. 'It isn't our foreign policy that angers them, it was a magazine article.' Every American should be in the streets to stop these criminals and the media should all be fired for complicity or incompetence. You are with us or against us.

14. I particularly don't like it when my cat pisses on my books.

or my couch, for that matter.

Beyond that, well, I'm the wrong person to ask because, um, I find the veneration of symbolic representations over the abstract ideas they are meant to represent a weird psychosis depressingly common to hairless, domesticated primates, i.e. humans.

Like when people get bent out of shape over flag-burning.. to the extent that they are willing to destroy the ideas that the flag represents, i.e. the freedom to engage in unpopular speech, like flag-burning.

It's like walking into a restaurant and eating the menu.

Things get even weirder when you talk about symbolic representations of ideas that are what I consider extremely abstract or subjective concepts (I will refrain, here, from using the word 'imaginary'), i.e. the "word" of "God". Now, yes, I DO understand that Muslims consider each and every Koran to be the specific, actual word of God, much as Catholics believe the eucharist to be the specific, actual body of Christ. I'm not technically religious so I'm not gonna get into that- except to say that when you get to a point where you are valuing a book -paper, ink- more than a human being, well, I personally do think you again have got your priorities more than a little funky.

That said, the practicalities of the situation are such that I don't believe high quality intelligence work is being done at Gitmo, I don't believe secret gulags and infinite detention without recourse to legal systems is decent American or Human behavior, and as such I'm hardly defending urine-splashing or toilet flushing or any of the other weirdness that may have gone down or is still going down there. Saying "which is worse?" is relevant but I think the real, pressing question is, "What the fuck are we doing over there and why are we involved with any of this in the first place?"

But as far as which is worse... Everyone is entitled to their own belief system, but I would be lying if I didn't mention my own belief that extremist interpretations of ALL the major religions, particularly when they progress into rigid fundamentalism, seem to have a tendency to warp many people's priorities into what I consider to be a pretty fucked up place.

I think it's screwed up to consider a book more important than a human life. I also think it's screwed up to consider a cheap tank of gas more important than a human life.

15. it occured to me last night
that pissing on the Koran is just an extension and variation of bush*'s economic policies...

as it applies to prisoners, it's called "TINKLE ON"
