I saw a cool bumper sticker the other day.....
it said GOD IS NOT SPELLED G O P! What really excited me is that I live in a mostly red county where support is generally high for the gop candidate. Then, yesterday I stopped at a stoplight and the small SUV next to me had practically the whole back window covered in stickers. Bush/Cheney, NRA, Marriage=man+woman (silhouettes)and the usual support the troops paraphernalia. The driver was a young male I would guess about 21 or so. I was SO tempted to open my window and tell him that he should sign up for the military since they are having so much trouble meeting recruiting goals. I chickened out. I did give him quite a look as I pulled away from the light. I am always afraid if I confront someone like that, they will have a gun on them or something.

8. Huh?
Cut it out. Speak English. This is AMERICA, dammit.

Yeah, soldiers made it possible for us to speak English.

Which soldiers?

The guys who fought the British who were trying to impose - what was it? - ENGLISH - on the Colonies?

Jesus. That's about as dumb as anything can be. I hope your friend's not a teacher.......................

11. first, you are presuming that the bumper sticker was in the USA
but on that presumption alone, what did the Native Americans speak? Lots of different languages, but English wasn't natural here.

And now, what are the historical events that led to English being the language spoken on THIS continent? Seems to me it was soldiers that kinda cleared out all of those languages and replaced them with English...

what the soldiers did to the Native Americans by slaughtering them, taking their land and forcing the English/American culture on them was a good thing?

If so, have you read any history on what was done to the indigenous people of this continent? It's an embarrassing and shameful history and certainly not one we should be proud of.

Edit: typo

21. I have Native American blood in me, so what do you think?
I think that the genocide of the Native Americans has been so well hidden from current American residents that they completely forget or never knew what was really here 500 years ago.

17. THANK......that was the key word
WE are supposed to THANK a soldier for the genocide of Native Americans. We are supposed to THANK a soldier for the disgusting war and land grab on the people of Mexico. Believe me, I would love to be speaking an Algonquin-based language right now, but unfortunately, most of the people who do have been EXTERMINATED by SOLDIERS. Also, is English somehow "superior" to other languages? Is English "better" than the languages used by the Native Americans? That is echoing colonialists and bigots, although I truly doubt you are either.

That sentiment is beyond WRONG.

You mean "assume," since you did quote the bumper sticker in English, yes, I "assumed." "Presume" means something else, which suggests to me that those "soldiers" didn't really do such a good job of imparting their knowledge of English to people who post things like yours.

Now, assuming, arguendo, that your premise is valid - and I contend it's specious - you must admit that the whole thing fails when you consider that the beings who inhabited what we now call North America - or the part of it known as the United States - presumably used grunts to communicate.

In that case, your quote bumper sticker should read, "... and if you can grunt, thank a caveman."

See how the words "assume" and "presume" were used in this message to you?

I am now assuming that English is not your first language.

7. Sorry,
But that is really quite bad. It defies logic. I wonder if Germans were rushing to their Nazi soldiers to thank them, because they let them speak German

4. that's cool. I swear I am seeing more "new" Kerry/Edwards
bumper stickers on my daily commute than I ever did before the election - and I am in the Heart of Red Ohio.

99% of my workplace voted for * -- I did have a Kerry sticker the last month or so before the election on my back window -- but to put it back on may stir up things.... (yet another reason to find a new job).

I took my K/E bumper sticker off quite some time ago, but still have my button attached to my purse strap.

9. I went to a new theater in a VERY RED(neck-y) part of town today
I was actually a bit worried I might actually have my first bout of vandalism. I found a spot on the end right in front of the main entrance.

Came out and no damage. :)

12. I saw one the other day that said, "Proud Blue Voter in a Red State."
A few cars down from that one was a car with a Kerry/Edwards sticker. It brightened my day since all I usually see are H2s sporting dubya04 crap, or Pray for our troops stickers, which always causes me to :eyes:.

:hi:
