Governor orders Confederate flag flown, NAACP to protest
I feel like the clock is in reverse, all around.

======

The Confederate battle flag flies below the Missouri state flag and the U.S. flag at the Confederate Memorial Historic Site near Higginsville, Mo., in this March 3, 1997, file photo. Republican Gov. Matt Blunt has ordered the flag, which was ordered taken down in 2003 by Democratic Gov. Bob Holden's administration, to fly Sunday, June 5, 2005, at the historic site, where a graveside service is planned to mark Confederate Memorial Day, and the order has outraged Mary Ratliff, president of theMissouri State Conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Missouri NAACP leaders vowed yesterday to vigorously fight Gov. Matt Blunt’s decision to allow the Confederate flag to fly during a service to commemorate Confederate Memorial Day.

That fight will start this afternoon, when members of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People plan to rally outside the Governor’s Mansion in Jefferson City.

Blunt’s allowing the flag to fly today at the Confederate Memorial State Historic Site in Higginsville was the topic of most concern at the Missouri State Conference of the NAACP at its quarterly meeting yesterday at Hawthorn Suites hotel in Columbia.

The group did not permit media representatives to attend the meeting.

1. It's Missouri. It's Confederate Memorial Day. It's the Confederate flag.
It's par for the course.

12. Not really
The previous governor in MO (a Dem) had signed a law two years ago prohibiting flying the confederate flag.

13. I know. I didn't make my point well at all.
It was that there will always be some racists everywhere on earth. Too there will always be those who see some symbols as intentionally racist, no matter what the intent of those displaying the symbols.

4. I very much hope
that this really was not the topic of most concern at the state NAACP conference. I'd hope there were more important things they spent their time worrying about like education, healthcare and employment.

7. In a Confederate Cemetery-Confederate Flag somewhat OK with me, however...
The Confederate Flag (not battle flag) was flown over Confederate burial sites by the Union during the Civil War. The Union allowed many regiments to keep their battle flags for Veteran organizations and reunions.

The Confederate Flag should not be flown on the same pole with American or State flag.

Confederate Flags should not be paid for by taxpayer money.

Blunt is an insensitive jerk who was not ready for the office of Governor of Missouri. Although I have no problem with the Confederate Flag I realize to many Americans it represents a symbol of hatred and for that reason am not in favor of its display.

11. Another case of pugs pandering to their base
Without the racist vote, pugs get 30% of the vote, unfortunately.
