RW best counter to DSM, "Downing Street Memo is old news"
This is the best they can come up with... Pretty weak!

Looking at the document in context it is hard to see what the commotion is about. Most of what might be thought sensational has already been written about elsewhere, to little fanfare. The charge of intelligence fraud (if it is such a charge) has already been investigated and found baseless. And the allegations that the president had already decided to go to war and was thus deceiving the American people are personal opinions based on unsubstantiated impressions from unnamed sources.

MR. MEHLMAN: Tim, that report has been discredited by everyone else who's looked at it since then. Whether it's the 911 Commission, whether it's the Senate, whoever's looked at this has said there was no effort to change the intelligence at all. The fact is that the intelligence of this country, the intelligence of Britain, the intelligence of the United Nations, the intelligence all over the world said that there were weapons of mass destruction present in Iraq. We knew that Saddam Hussein had used weapons of mass destruction before. We still know that there was a weapons of mass destruction program. He was evading the sanctions, and he had plans to reconstitute the program. We also knew that Saddam Hussein had uniquely invaded his neighbors, had uniquely supported terrorists and we all know today that we are safer because he's been removed from power.

So I believe that that individual report not only has been discredited but that the overall reasons for removing Saddam Hussein were broader than that, they were correct, and we're now safer and certainly the people of Iraq are safer now that Saddam Hussein has been removed from power.

Given the lack of new information in the memo the collective yawn from American media outlets is hardly surprising.

Ellis Henican, a columnist for New York Newsday and a FOX News contributor, said the allegations of evidence-fixing had been made before the 2004 election by former senior administration officials Richard Clarke (search) and Paul O'Neill (search), and while many people believe they were right, it had little impact on the re-election of Bush in November.

"It's a little late," he said of the memo story, adding that people are resigned to the fact that the United States is in Iraq for the long term, regardless of what events led to the war. "We're kind of stuck."

Besides, it's all Clinton's fault, so just try to let go of the past and move on. :sarcasm:

2. Conservative morons voted for bush in 2004
and that justifies dismissing the DSM? Funny. The DSM wasn't made pulic until long after the morons left the voting booth. Yeah, who the fuck cares that the president is a liar? Obviously not conservatives. And some wonder why we use Bizarro world as an example of today's political landscape.

that they will all walk like tinmen...

Old news... If they cant even come up with a counterpoint anymore we are going to have no problems ousting them...

Iraq is a mess and under the pressure we are seeing the true republican party. The party of greed at the expense of the poor, war profiteering and blatant disregard for the intelligence of even the most average american...

5. Those minutes prove the one thing the RW could avoid: intent.
The minutes prove an intention to deceive which is why it is so damning.

BushCO & the neoCONs INTENTIONALLY mislead and betrayed the American people.

8. Notice that the National Review article is dated today.
I expect that to be the template for discrediting this when Kerry, again, has to make a public announcement to get something in the news (just like the campaign).

See it's in print (the discrediting) so it MUST be credible. :sarcasm:

14. Unfortunately, that quote is all they need.
Without a majority in Congress, or support from the media, they will never really be forced to answer for this document.

I do agree it's weak, but I just don't see this thing getting legs, until someone pushes for Impeachment(or sues for war crimes).

22. This was released in England ONE WEEK before elections...
Blair didn't refute it. If Blair didn't find a way to discredit the memo one week before the election (and it did cost him dearly), the Republican claim that it's not true doesn't carry water.

29. Obviously a new non-partisan judiciary is required.
An independent board of judges, a highest court, without corporate ties or partisan influences, to cover cases such as this.

Stacking the deck to avoid prosecution for war crimes is a bit of a sign of a problem which requires resolution, eh?

We need something...something like a constitution... With liberty and justice for all. Yeah, that's the ticket. Want to talk about the benefits of old-fashioned values?

He supposedly did it in the late 80s. So you can use that as a comeback to the freepers who think DSM is old news.

20. DSM doesn't exist in a vacuum: Bolton, Wilson, Richard Clark tie into this
Why is no one interviewing Joe Wilson regarding DSM?

Why is no one interviewing Bolton regarding DSM?

Why is no one interviewing Richard Clark regarding DSM?

Where is the Corporate Media?

Peace.

We have all the evidence of mendacity and illegal war-making we need to indict and prosecute Bush, Blair and every other neoconster scum-bag on the planet having any involvement in the Bush's illegal war on Iraq and all the torture and other atrocities that have been committed since August 2002.
