These people have this grandiose delusion that Texas is Jesus' own personal chosen Paradise, and most of them seem to have far more loyalty to Texas than to the United States.

23. My background on this subject:

I had to live in a dingy Holiday Inn Express in Baytown, Texas (the ass end of Houston) for eleven months on a job.

You may ask, "why didn't he get a nicer place to stay?" The answer to that is, I was only supposed to be there for a few weeks and the job kept getting stretched out until before I knew it almost a year had passed.

So anyway, Baytown, Texas is the absolute armpit of America. Disgusting, ignorant, inbred people, a thick visible stew that we were supposed to believe was breathable air, and an intense summer heat that stifled your lungs.

And you want to know what the highlight of my stay in Texas was? Working with so many Mexicans. In spite of the stereotypes, I've never worked with a crew so eager to learn and go the extra mile.

I fucking hate Texas, though. Like I said, people there seem prouder of being a Texan (still not sure why) than they are of being American. I can say with certainty that there are more Texas state flags flying there than American flags, and that is sad.

Wait just a minute. What about the few liberal democratic DUers that are in the state. If Texas secedes we will probably be hunted down and hung. Please, let us at least stay in the Union. We are few in number but I am hearing from a lot of other teachers who were stupid enough to vote this wacky Texas legislature we have in. They say they won't make that mistake again, but I am not sure they mean it. I work at a school with 37 teachers that has only 4 admitted liberals. It is hard but at least I get to tell 129 6th graders the truth about politics. Like my Daddy taught me, There are 2 kinds of Republicans: 1. rich or 2. stupid.

I don't know if anyone is still reading this thread, but I HAD to respond..........

I am an Austinite who was born in South Carolina to a Southern Baptist Minister, moved to right outside New York City when I was 10, spent summers in Cape Cod off Boston, and have lived in Austin for the past 11 years since coming here to go to UT. I have experienced both the far right and the far left throughout the years. I voted for Clinton in 1996, Al Gore in 2000 and voted for Kerry in 2004 (and my mother who lives in New York voted for nutso in 2000, although she gained back her senses and voted for Kerry in 2004). I read this website on probably a daily basis, and know MANY people here who do the same. If you really want to get into it, Texas wasn't a freaking republican state until Bush got his hands on it; in fact, up until the late 1950's, the real election for Governor of Texas was held in the Democratic Primaries, because no-one ever voted republican.

There may be alot of things I don't like about this state (and believe me when I say alot of things), but, as Kinky Friedman wrote in Texas Monthly (now running for governor), "Texas is the place that best tolerates the contradictory nature of America itself...Texas trying to forge something new, has outgrown Bush. As much as he can be a man of the West, he reverts under pressure to conventions of the old Eastern aristocracy, surrounding himself with loyal family retainers, believing he has no obligation to explain himself, certain that, because of his birthright, he knows best. But these are complicated notions that don't serve any outsider's agenda. It's a lot easier to label us all cowboys and move on."

But this is also the state of Molly Ivans, Ben Barnes, Jim Hightower, Natalie Maines, Dan Rather, and the Iconoclast newspaper; the state in which the Democratic party actually left to try and halt the re-districting lines; the state of the upcoming Democracy Festival with Howard Dean in two weeks, which has the highest attendance of them all, and the majority are from Texas; the state that raised more money for Hillary Clinton last month than California; the state where I witnessed a 5 hour line last month when Bill Clinton came for his book signing; the state where I talked to people of every color and every race who abhorred W; the state where there was a little talked about RIOT in Houston when people were told that the voting location in a poor area was being closed because the machines were overloaded.

This is a state, like many others in this country, that has many many problems; and because we are entrenched in them - the abject poverty, poor school districts, horrible health care, disrupted worker's rights, corrupt politicians and conservative Christian movements that make the holy trinity look like a radical liberal - we work every day at changing the politics. I have walked the streets registering voters, dropped off reams of petitions supporting the impeachment of Bush and the destruction of Tom Delay, worked in phone banks for hours supporting the Dean dozen and other local democratic leaders, donated more than 10% of my income to the democratic party over the last year, even though my income is not what anyone could call healthy, and SOBBED on November 2nd around 10:30 PM when I figured out that the 2004 elections were going to destroy this country. I don't think I woke up until a couple of months ago.

So before you write us off, remember your allies here, and how hard they worked. Let's try to convince the American people of the evil of ONE man, before we convince them of the idiocy of an entire state.
