What's funny is that most current-day writing instruction would recognize just what you're saying, and look askance at the notion that those types of paragraphs are the ONLY types that should be used. That is, it recognizes the different formal structures used on message boards, and certainly doesn't prescribe ONE formal structure for all kinds of writing (which would be a ridiculous lesson to teach anyway). The whole fetishization of that kind of paragraph (there are many kinds of paragraphs) is amusing, to say the least.

When writing a definition paragraph, you take a thing or an idea and explain what it is.

First you place it in a class, and demonstrate how it fits the predicates for that class, then you distinguish it from the other members of the class.

Or, you could do what's called an enumerative definition whereby you pile up the to-be-defined's features.

Definitions are rhetorical.

You could also do classification paragraphs, contrast paragraphs, comparison paragraphs, etc. Any of the modes that were taught for entirte papers could also be used in paragraphs. The "topic sentence+ support+ conclusion sentence" paragraph structure is just one of many, and one that is not used very often.

Where do you "logically" break a paragraph in a piece of fiction, for example, and what should the paragraph contain?
