Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe has strongly defended the demolition of illegal houses, which the UN says has left some 200,000 people homeless.

Apparently he felt that the way to get rid of crime is to do mass demolition of shantytowns.

1. Don't we treat the homeless the same way here?

Don't we confiscate their cardboard boxes, and any other shelters they try to erect to fight the elements? Some do gooders have tried to provide them with tents but tent cities erected in protest of their condition have been bulldozed down. The official reason is to cut down on crime. The real reason is that poor people on the edge of existence is bad for business. It makes a city or town look poor and mismanaged, bad for tourism and attracting business.

I would suspect Mugabe has the same reason, to attract tourists and entrepreneurs for his business interests. How, much easier would it be to provide the poor with essential shelter and utilities. Then the tourists and entrepreneurs would probably offer jobs to the poor.
