Man dies in police custody

TUCSON - An autopsy on a man who died while in police custody was inconclusive, meaning authorities will have to await toxicology reports.

Robert Chandler, 41, was driving erratically when police pulled him over on Friday. He became combative and hit the officer in the head.

The officer then used pepper spray on Chandler, but it didn't successfully stop him. Another officer and a passer-by helped restrain Chandler.

A preliminary autopsy on Monday couldn't determine a cause of death. A toxicology report will take four to eight weeks, said Sgt. Carlos Valdez, a spokesman for the Tucson Police Department.

It could have been methods employed in restraining him. There's very little information here, but my feelings are that he didn't die of natural causes.

It's an item of interest with me. I feel that they are being over used and have been misrepresented as being non lethal.

They do, on occassion, cause death.

That is not "non lethal."
