Dear Senator Obama,

I am not one of you constituents, sadly, but I am a proud Democrat and I will be working for your presidential bid in 2008, or maybe 2012 after Hillary.

I am writing to simply and respectfully say, “Lay Off Dean!”

For crying in a bucket (as my Mom used to say), did you notice that you hammering on a fellow Democrat is the most national media play you've gotten since you were elected? Please, please don't fall into the trap of playing to the center in non-election years. That's when you should throw red meat to the base. And remember the Republicans Eleventh Commandment: Thou shalt not speak ill of fellow Republicans. Try that, instead of the Democrats' traditional circular firing squad.

Governor Dean is trying something different. Please do not undermine his efforts in the run up to the 2006 elections.

Dear Mr. Obama,

I am a life long Democrat, I don't think Dean deserves criticism for his comment. Not for the integrity of the Democratic Party, but because his statement was accurate and I don't think it's really that offensive.

I am more making fun of the republicans for being so offended at being called "pretty much white christian". What, is there something wrong with that? I've been mistaken for one before (and I am non-christian), and I wasn't offended! But, nonetheless, the republicans sure as hell ARE "pretty much white christian".

So, I'd say not to worry too much about whether or not offense is intended by a few words and to continue on with those issues for which we democrats stand.

3. A few suggestions....

Don't just call him "Dean" the first time you refer to him. "Party Chairman" Dean, or "Dr." Dean, or even "Gov." Dean sounds more dignified than plain old "Dean" does.

Also, don't tell him you'll work for him WHEN he runs for President one day. Leave that decision up to him. If he wants to be a Senator (mine, BTW) for 5 or 6 terms, I'm OK with that. DOn't buy into the RW "beat up on Hillary and/or Obama in 2008" fantasy.

Also, I think your tone is a bit too hostile. You can say you support Dean without calling him (Obama) out as a "firing squad" member. Remember that he does play for your team (more than Peter Fitzgerald ever did) and word your message accordingly.

Obama will play this right. Just have faith and let the man work.

4. Well, there's one big general thing...

...if I were the recipient of this letter, I wouldn't know for sure that you actually knew what I had said! And that frankly smacks of Astroturf, "I heard you said this" kind of response, and there's no reason for him to take it seriously. If this were addressed to me, I would take it a lot more seriously if you had a direct quote or two in there and actually took me on on points. Respectfully and calmly, of course.


Also agreed with the previous poster about the Presidential thing. He's declared no intention whatsoever (it would be wildly premature if he did: he's a 43-year-old first-year Senator, after all) and it sounds more like a media meme than anything based on anything substantial.

I think my first point is the most important, though.
