Chicks to break with country scene

The Dixie Chicks say they don't want to be a country music band any more.

Violinist Martie Maguire told Spiegel magazine: "We don't feel part of the country scene any longer, it can't be our home any more."

She said she was disappointed other country singers didn't back up the Dixie Chicks in their criticism of George W Bush's politics on Iraq.

"A few weeks ago, Merle Haggard said a couple of nice words about us, but that was it," Maguire complained.

"The support we got came from others, like Bruce Springsteen."

On Wednesday night, the five remaining Republican candidates held their big New Hampshire debate. And what did they spend their time fighting about? "The Awful Truth Mosh Pit!" The Reuters news agency called it "surreal," and Gary Bauer went into nutty overdrive accusing Keyes of being "anti-family" because he was moshing to the music of "The Machine Rages On" (!), calling the group "pro-terrorist" and saying that's what the "kids at Columbine" listened to.

4. They already have a lot of cross over appeal.

Their music appeals to a lot of people who don't normally listen to country. They will not have to change much to become successful as a mainstream "pop" band.

10. I can only verify

I went to see them live in Munich on Sunday and I loved every minute of it. The audience ranged from americans and Germans dressed on the cowboy stuff to 18-19 year old trendy guys to over 50 hippie-types.

The Chicks were GREAT, best gig I've seen since the late 80's.

20. No, not at all.

First: I´m NEVER EVER WEARING SHORTS except at the beach.
We were sitting at the side stands, so there was no possibility for dancing. And my daughter is so terribly shy, she would never dance in public... (I hope this will get better, when she is older...)

I do not like Country music. But the Dixie Chicks were growing on me even before they made their anti-Bush statement.

They belong in the 'adult contemporary' category, I think. Like how Norah Jones is. Sure, she's jazz, but she has a mainstream sensibility to her music that non-jazz people picked up on. They're like Fleetwood Mac, the Grateful Dead, Dave Matthews, or Jimmy Buffet, who have all had country influences in their music from time to time.

Good for them. I'm surprised the press hasn't made a bigger deal out of this.

Calling the Clear Channel bluff, perhaps?

Clear Channel owns stations with Pop/Rock formats, and that typical listening audience is not as blindly lead and willing to accept a blacklisting of talented musicians. Country fans acted predictably and burned and smashed CD's like an obedient mob.

And aren't the Clear Channel stations still playing the DChix on the non-country formats?

For example, just how many Johnny Cash tunes did one hear on Clear Channel stations before his death? How much airplay does Steve Earle get? Shoot, John Mellencamp is more country than Toby Keith!

There's a boatload of twangy, soulful, hard-edged artists (The Derailers, Two Tons Of Steel, Lucinda Williams ad infinitum ) that "Country Music" stations will simply not touch because they stray from The Formula. You could start a whole radio format with these folks:
