Steroid Abuse Can Contribute to Police Brutality -- Even Murder By MARC LALLANILLA

May 24, 2005 — Amid the furor over steroid use by superstar athletes like baseball's Jose Canseco and Jason Giambi, another story is quietly unfolding in small towns and big cities across America — cops on steroids.

From New York City to Norman, Okla., police departments are investigating a growing number of incidents involving uniformed police officers who are using steroids to build beefy, muscular physiques.

Police departments are concerned because it is illegal in the United States to possess steroids without a prescription. They are listed by the Drug Enforcement Agency as a Schedule III substance, like morphine, opium, barbiturates and other prescription drugs.

But there is an even greater problem: violent, aggressive behavior, a common side effect of steroids, can contribute to police brutality — even murder.

From an NJ State Police Dective First Class. A fine man. He was also a barracks traing officer. He confided in me that the single most scary thing he saw was the rampant abuse of steroids by the new troopers. They were being supplied steroids by NJSP PhysEd officers.

He considered the users quite insane.

...as someone who has been around the stuff for decades-what a bunch of hype-another attempt to find a common enemy(since the war on drugs isn't very successful).When fascists want control,they need a target,and this might actually be one they CAN control,since the addiction potential is low,and most casual users could give or take them.This would result in a moral "success"(in the shadow of so many failures)...and "save us" from the viscious,"roid raged" public servants out there.

4. Actually, I remember a case in Atlanta about ten years ago

A group of bodybuilding cops who took steroids and commited murder for hire, robbery and such. They were busted and sent to prison, and I'll never forget the photo of the ringleader, who was benching over 300 pounds and looked like a walking, puffed-up gonad gorilla. Neck as thick as an oak and a championship quality upper torso. Perhaps it's not a widespread problem, but there are steroid abusers in all walks of life, including hardcore druggies, and cops are certainly no exception to that.

PETERSBURG -- Around midnight, Oct. 13, 2003, Petersburg police officers Michael A. Tweedy and David E. House stopped a driver to question him about a hit-and-run incident.

The driver, a meat worker named Lamont Cortez Koonce, ran away but was eventually tackled and doused with pepper spray.

As Koonce was on the ground and House was trying to handcuff him, authorities said, Tweedy accidentally sprayed himself and went into a rage.

According to Koonce's attorney, Tweedy kicked and stomped on Koonce's head repeatedly, walking away and then returning to continue the blows as Koonce lay motionless, gurgling his own blood.
