A Strategy of Lies (Col. Sam Gardiner)
Edited on Sun Jun-12-05 11:08 AM by trof
I remember watching Col. Gardiner on PBS's NewsHour before and during the initial invasion of Iraq and thinking "Now this guy seems to have it right."
Boy, does he ever. I don't guess we'll ever see this on CNN, but here, as they say, is the whole enchilada.

A Strategy of Lies: How the White House Fed the Public a Steady Diet of Falsehoods

The 56-page investigation was assembled by USAF Colonel (Ret.) Sam Gardiner. "Truth from These Podia: Summary of a Study of Strategic Influence, Perception Management, Strategic Information Warfare and Strategic Psychological Operations in Gulf II" identifies more than 50 stories about the Iraq war that were faked by government propaganda artists in a covert campaign to "market" the military invasion of Iraq. Gardiner has credentials. He has taught at the National War College, the Air War College and the Naval Warfare College and was a visiting scholar at the Swedish Defense College.

According to Gardiner, "It was not bad intelligence" that lead to the quagmire in Iraq, "It was an orchestrated effort that began before the war" that was designed to mislead the public and the world. Gardiner's research lead him to conclude that the US and Britain had conspired at the highest levels to plant "stories of strategic influence" that were known to be false.

The Times of London described the $200-million-plus US operation as a "meticulously planned strategy to persuade the public, the Congress, and the allies of the need to confront the threat from Saddam Hussein." The multimillion-dollar propaganda campaign run out of the White House and Defense Department was, in Gardiner's final assessment "irresponsible in parts" and "might have been illegal."

"Washington and London did not trust the peoples of their democracies to come to the right decisions," Gardiner explains. Consequently, "Truth became a casualty. When truth is a casualty, democracy receives collateral damage." For the first time in US history, "we allowed strategic psychological operations to become part of public affairs... What has happened is that information warfare, strategic influence, and strategic psychological operations pushed their way into the important process of informing the peoples of our two democracies."

Here's his report in 6 pdf files. The organization of the Office of Global Communications is right out of Hitler's Ministry of Propaganda. It's no surprise to see the names of Karl Rove, Karen Hughes, Mary Matalin, Scooter Libby, etc.

3. The preface is interesting re: Mark Fineman.

Preface
My intent was not to do this myself. The work had to be a combination of the
kind of research I was doing and investigative journalism. I could do the outside part.
Someone had to talk to those inside. After my return from an information warfare
conference in London in July, I began looking for interest in one of the major
newspapers. I found that interest in Mark Fineman at the LA Times.
Mark had covered the war and previously had been bureau chief for the paper in
Philippines, India, Cyprus and Mexico City. Although he had covered some of the
stories I examined in my research, he saw very early the point I was making about the
implication of their being seen as a whole, the strategic picture. We continued to
exchange e-mails, talk by phone and met four times after our initial session. He shared
information he was uncovering. I shared my developing research.
Mark Fineman died of an apparent heart attack while on assignment in Baghdad
on September 23, 2003.

Is it tinfoil hat time?

8. Whoa!
This guy, Gardiner, is obviously a pinko-commie-LIEberal.

His accusations could lead to impeachment of the greatest pResident we have ever had. Quote: "....could have been illegal."

Thank gawd there is no video of the pResident lying to the American people, because if there was we'd be seeing it on the LIEberal press every night, eh?

It's all too clear that the intellignce was sound, and there really were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. It's just that certain LIEberal, highly honored military people, have turned commie and decided to destroy America.

:sarcasm:

18. Thank you. Here is a quote from Hitler's "Mein Kampf" that fits very well

In view of the primitive simplicity of their minds they more easily fall a victim to a big lie than to a little one, since they themselves lie in little things, but would be ashamed of lies that were too big.

Such a falsehood will never enter their heads and they will not be able to believe in the possibility of such monstrous effrontery and infamous misrepresentation in others; yes, even when enlightened on the subject, they will long doubt and waver, and continue to accept at least one of these causes as true.

--Adolf Hitler, Mein Kampf, part I chapter X

It's not a new strategy. The vulnerability of honest people in their inability to see through the true monsters was noted long, long ago:

It is as hard for the good to suspect evil, as it is for the bad to suspect good. -Marcus Tullius Cicero, statesman, orator, writer (106-43 BCE)

Here is my standard letter to the Media:

Dear Sir/Madam:

As you know, on May 1 of this year a document now commonly referred to as “|The Downing Street Memo” was released into the British Press. This document raises serious question about how the administration was handling intelligence related to Iraq and appears to suggest that the Bush Administration had already decided on war when publicly it was claiming that no such decision had been made. Now further documents have been released in the British media which cast even further doubts.

These documents and other documents suggest that the Bush administration was determined to “fix intelligence” around a predetermined policy. Some of these documents make it clear that the administration had no credible plan for dealing with the post-war occupation.

It is most disturbing that there has been a virtual media blackout regarding “The Downing Street Memo” and other disturbing documents.

Even more disturbing is the absence in the America media of any credible in-depth follow-up discussion or coverage regarding strong, credible and independent evidence that the Bush Administration intentionally mislead the U.S. Congress, the media and the American people.

I do hope you will accept the responsibility to address this issue and provide serious investigative journalism into this matter.

Furthermore, on Thursday June 16, 2005, Rep. John Conyers, Jr., ranking minority member of the House Judiciary Committee, and other House members will hold a hearing to consider testimony concerning the Downing Street minutes and questions of possible fixing of prewar intelligence. I do hope you will be giving full coverage to these events.

Sincerely,
