Let's get this straight . . .
Being against the abusive use of tasers or excessive force by law enforcement does not make someone anti-law enforcement!

Being against the war and the abuses of the war does not make someone anti-troops!

Being against the abusive use of tasers or excessive force by law enforcement does not make someone pro-criminals and does not mean that those that oppose the abuses want the police to be harmed or to work in constant danger.

Being against torture and the abuses that are going on in Iraq does not make someone anti-military and pro-terrorists. It does not mean that anyone wants the troops to be harmed or to be in danger.

As I fight for the civil rights of one, even the lowest criminal, even the most vile enemy in our custody, I fight for your civil rights. I challenge the arms of my government (police, judges, politicians) to uphold the constitution and to do their jobs. They work for me, I am a member of the public and they are public servants. They took an oath to uphold the constitution and I want them to do that, to stop making excuses for neglecting the constitution or for violating ANYONE'S rights.

Even as the misguided members of our society demand that we gain control at all costs, even as they malign me and others on this forum for standing up for our rights and against the oppression, I am struggling for the rights for the misguided and the confused, I am struggling for the rights of my political enemies. They may hate that I am vocal, they may not agree with what I post, but they should appreciate that the rights I try to protect, that I demand our government respect and protect, are their rights too!

As I oppose the war, I challenge my government to stand by and to stand up for the principles upon which this great nation was formed. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are not just rights that I am entitled to, they are the rights that all that walk the face of this earth are entitled to. As I do not want another nation to force their standards, morals and religion on me, I don't believe it is our place to USE FORCE to force our standards, our morals and our religious beliefs on another people!

I don't want folks to be killed in my name, to be maimed under the guise of "spreading democracy" or to be left homeless and tattered because we claim to want to "make them safer". I don't want any more of our soldiers to die fighting illegal and immoral wars. I want my nation back and I want my civil rights and the civil rights of all protected and respected!

An injustice anywhere is an injustice everywhere!

6. Welcome to DU!
:hi: I just had to post the obvious.

Some folks think that chosing sides is the only way to survive and I don't see it that way. I know that I can be on the side of the troops and against the war, on the side of law enforcement and against abuse and excessive force. The only side I am on is the side of humanity and respect for others. If I want respect, I must give respect. If I want my rights protected, I must demand that others' rights are protected. It is because I am pro-troops that I oppose the war, it is because I am pro-law enforcement that I oppose excessive force. It is that simple!

Again, welcome.

Thank God you are taking them so seriously and that you will instill in your boys the love for this Nation and our constitution. Sadly, others have overlooked or forgotten the constitution, they are willing to foresake our rights for their perceived safety. Bless you for taking your responsibilities so seriously!

13. Great post
Arguing that a taser shouldn't have been used is NOT arguing that people should just be able to do whatever the hell they want when dealing with cops. That has been the biggest method of argument. "She should have stepped out of the car/he shouldn't have faught on the bus...." Well, no shit. That type of argument drives me up the wall! Again, thanks for posting.

21. The police should be held to a higher standard than us
common folks. They are supposed to know the laws and they have taken an oath to uphold them and to "protect and serve". That oath does not include an asterick with the notation "protect only the innocent and not the bad guys."

Thanks for the thanks and the comments! :hi:

"Without debate, without criticism, no administration and no country can succeed- and no republic can survive."- JFK

Another thought...

"The citizen can bring our political and governmental institutions back to life, make them responsible and accountable and keep them honest. No one else can."-John Gardner

And another...

"We shall have to repent in this generation, not so much for the evil deeds of the wicked people, but for the appalling silence of the good people."-MLK

And finally...

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American Public."-Teddy Roosevelt

The love of country (Dad was a WWII vet) and the love of their faith would have them so torn. Both were very liberal minded, they just would have trouble believing their nation and their prez was such a liar.

I have one sibling out of 9 that is a liberal. Family gatherings can get hairy. Thank god I smoke, gives me an excuse to escape and go outside. :silly:

The video game ads sucker kids into signing up. It is so harmless, it's just like a game. Then they get there and learn that it ain't no game.

the right to keep and bear arms, is a civil right in the U.S.

When a person is convicted of most felonies, they lose their civil rights including RKBA. When their civil rights are restored it includes RKBA unless the restoration explicitly excludes RKBA.

You say "I want my nation back and I want my civil rights and the civil rights of all protected and respected!" I'm glad you and I are on the same side.

If the author wanted to say she/he supported "only some civil rights", then she/he should amend the post with appropriate limiting statements.

Do you just come to a thread to start something? You may be stepping into more than you can handle!

No one mentioned weapons, except for those nasty weapons that cops are allowed to carry without proper training. Are you sure you want to go down this route.

Losing the right to vote and/or to bear arms does not mean a "convict" loses his other constitutional rights. If you are in law enforcement and don't know or appreciate that, I beg you to find another job.

93. Not a disruption but an observation re your statement about supporting
Edited on Tue Jun-14-05 11:39 AM by jody
"all civil rights". Your post talked about tasers at the beginning and BATF has declared tasers are firearms. Tasers are therefore subject to U.S. Code TITLE 18, PART I, CHAPTER 44—FIREARMS. I'm sure you already knew that and that SCOTUS said RKBA is a civil right. I was surprised and delighted that you support "all civil rights".

A convicted criminal under federal law has his/her Right to Keep and Bear Arms (RKBA) restored when his/her "civil rights have been restored under federal law, the law of the jurisdiction where the earlier proceedings were held." (see SCOTUS decision 511 U.S. 368 below)

BEECHAM v. UNITED STATES, 511 U.S. 368 (1994)
QUOTE
Petitioners can take advantage of 921(a)(20) only if their civil rights have been restored under federal law, the law of the jurisdiction where the earlier proceedings were held. The choice of law clause is logically read to apply to the exemption clause. The inquiry throughout the statutory scheme is whether the person has a qualifying conviction on his record. The choice of law clause defines the rule for determining what constitutes a conviction. Asking, under the exemption clause, whether a person's civil rights have been restored is just one step in determining whether Page II something should "be considered a conviction," a determination that, by the terms of the choice of law clause, is governed by the law of the convicting jurisdiction. That the other three items listed in the exemption clause are either always or almost always done by the jurisdiction of conviction also counsels in favor of interpreting civil rights restoration as possessing the same attribute. This statutory structure rebuts the arguments used by other Circuits to support their conclusion that the two clauses should be read separately. Moreover, even if there is no federal law procedure for restoring civil rights to federal felons, nothing in 921(a)(20) supports the assumption that Congress intended all felons to have access to all the procedures specified in the exemption clause, especially because there are many States that do not restore civil rights, either.

By the way...the 'SCOTUS' also ruled that Bush 'won' the White House...despite losing the election.

But what does the 'right' to bear arms have to do with THIS thread? The thread author didn't single out the 2nd amendment for exclusion. You brought it up out of thin air.

As you know...the Bush Junta has no plans to screw with your guns. But they're determined to destroy the rest of the Bill of Rights and the protections against government tyranny and oppression.

Don't come in here with your garbage about carrying weapons and equate that to the other rights as guaranteed by the constitution. That is one of the rights and only one - if you don't care about protecting and respecting the others, then you will see that your right as provided in the 2nd amendment will soon vanish away, to be traded for "safety".

Go out and educate yourself and come back, then we will chat.

Yet you advocate removing our right to due process? With the TASER--cops across the country are playing judge, jury, and in some cases, executioner for small and petty crimes where deadly force would have never been used previously.
If a policeman uses the TASER--he should be held to the same standards of deadly force as if he had used a 9 mm to shoot someone--including being taken off of duty for a full rigorous investigation of the incident, his file noted that he used deadly force, and whatever necessary reprimands if applicable.
Perhaps then some of these TASER happy cops would think before they zap.

I've been an active proponent of the right to due process for a long time.

Regarding police using various weapons to defend them selves and arrest a suspect. If excessive force is used, local governments have procedures for disciplining and prosecuting an officer if excessive force is used.

What would you suggest the officer use if a suspect refuses to obey an officer?
