I love it when this happens....
I was in church this morning and there were four guys talking over in the corner before the service started. I'd say the youngest one was about 70 or so. They were discussing Dean's comments about how republicans never earned a living. They all seemed to be pondering it, sort of muttering, when one of them said "Well, he's RIGHT!" and the other three busted a gut laughing and agreed with him.

Then one of them turned around and I saw his shirt. It was a t-shirt he was wearing with khaki slacks and it read "Damn Liberal."

:wow:

I made it a point to compliment his shirt and ask him where he got it. He said his great-niece sent it to him for his 80th birthday and it's his favorite shirt.

What a great morning.

5. The UU church has truly been a place of refuge for my family.
And what's great is EVERY SINGLE Sunday, I see more and more new faces. We officially joined a week ago. This Sunday there were four new families there. What the hell??? How are they even hearing about us? It's just a tiny church.

Oh and our church has been burglarized and vandalized three times in three months. This time our banner declaring us as a welcoming congregation to the GLBT community was missing. I thought maybe someone stole it but the lay minister said he had to take it down because some anti-gay slurs were spray-painted on it.

:-(

6. Shoot, I keep suggesting them on this board
and others every time a believer complains that his church has become a business or a GOP venue or just concentrates on hot button issues and forgets all about why they're supposed to be there.

They really are an island of tolerance and sanity most places, and I feel wonderful about recommending them to believers.

10. I found out about UU from an internet friend
and I also saw it mentioned here quite a bit, so I went to http://www.uua.org and found a local congregation. I wasn't ready for a while (very burned by organized religion) but I finally went and was shocked at what a breath of fresh air it was. I found myself looking forward to the next Sunday and I've never done that before. I didn't even know these people, this congregation was right in my own backyard all the time.

23. another UU church in Virginia had a similar thing happen, Bouncy ...
They've retired their pro same-sex marriage banner (the first time it was slashed, then someone set fire to it, and there were concerns that they might burn the church building), but their activist work continues. It's hard to keep UUs down!

2. Too cool....thanks for that....
see, the old guys who have seen it all get it!

and here's what Dean's response to Cheney's horrible comments should be....

"Consider the source"

if Bush weren't the face of BushCo, Cheney would be the most hated thing in the world...or maybe I underestimate the world's understanding of the situation, which would indeed make Cheney the most hated...so...consider the source

you are whether or not Dean speaks truth to the power.

What scintillating experience!

8. Don't assume that these "old" guys aren't liberal;
Many are Roosevelt Democrats and union people....they know what the score is....they watched Reagan destroy manufacturing jobs in the U.S. in the 80's; and see Idiot Boy for the spoiled wealthy child that he is. I have also talked to many who realized too late the catastrophe of Vietnam and as WWII vets see it happening again , as well as those hard earned veteran benefits going down the drain ( not to mention S.S.).... give the grays their due!

19. No problem.
It's a UU church and apparently people don't have a problem with the occasional mild expletive.

14. I'll second the fact that elderly does not automatically equal neocon.
Yes, many of them grew up in slower, more traditional times, but they know when they're being had. The Right loves to trumpet about how they are the party of "traditional values" and "hard work," when we all know that is not the case. That's a great story, BB. Thanks for sharing. :hi:

18. He was kind of dressed up.
Another guy wears shorts as often as the weather allows him to (which is a lot).

And a third guy wears sandals, then takes them off after the service and runs around barefoot during forum.

I started off wearing slacks and sweaters and felt horribly overdressed pretty quickly.

21. My Dad Is Following Dean Now. He Saw Dean On Russert And Liked
how Dean does his famous 'straight talk' and how he also admitted mistakes.

Now Dad reads the paper and laughs as elected Democrats distance themselves from Dean and also at the Media who is in overdrive trying to badmouth him.

:)
