am very disenchanted by the undertone of hate and malicious intent in many threads...Discussion and fair play is the way to go. If you can't articulate your message in a civil tone,then go visit another thread, chill and come back when you have your thoughts collected. It is not the freepers either, so that excuse won't fly...

Lets stop it NOW! Respect for ones opinion use to be the norm here....I'd like to see us regain some sense of kinship again.

It's not the 'hate' that's the problem, it's the malicious intent at the source of the hate, which is easily concealed but will come out in some people's language when those people start feeling some pressure. There's a certain tension in their language that eventually erupts into hysteria and obsessive behavior.

"Malicious intent" is an excellent phrase to describe what goes on in those threads.

Ever enter a thread and just feel like the whole thing was toxic? But then you go and look at the individual posts and see that only a handful of people on the thread are truly provocateurs. Then another 'toxic' thread starts and you have the same characters obsessing on the same topic and repeating the same phrases over and over again.

I'm sure there's some psychological literature out there somewhere that explains this personality. I just see it on all kinds of message boards. I used to see it on Usenet a lot, and DU reminds me more of Usenet (minus the trolling) than any other forum I go to. I guess because it's a political board, and political boards attract provocateurs. If anybody thinks that sort of thing doesn't happen on DU, they're either lying or dreaming.

Makes me wish I'd double-majored in psychology in college.

I got into one of these controversial topics a while back, and this person was showing up in every thread I posted to. Eventually I e-mailed them and asked them if they were following me around.

They played innocent but used the exchange to coyly solicit personal information about me.

I suspect that the more flamboyant types are not the problem - it's the ones who subtly direct the content of the threads. Let's face it, if you're truly 'crazy like a fox', you'll get others to do their dirty work for you and take the fall when people wise up to what's going on.

Not at individual DU members but at the fact we can't seem to come together on what's important.

It's disgusting to me that we have let the GOP walk all over this nation. Do any of you for one second think that the republican voters are going to hold their party accountable? I have republican friends who just shrug off the war in Iraq even when they admit to me that it probably wasn't a good idea.

The only group that is going to fight the GOP fascists is US! All this "well...Dean should have said blah blah blah", you guys don't get it! Republicans bash the democrats over and over, they spread lies and we sit down and take it. Dean just said "republicans are pretty much white Christians"...which is the TRUTH. That's all the republican party cares about! Dean used to be a republican and IS A WHITE CHRISTIAN, the man knows who he's dealing with. I can understand his frustration and anger and I'm sick of the "polite police" pooping all over our party.

If we don't end the petty bickering we will lose focus...then we might as well just hand over the next elections to the republicans. If you are going to fight about this crap then who do YOU represent? I am a democrat b/c we are NOT a selfish party, we cater to everyone...yes, even the white Christians!

I know I'm pretty new here so sorry for the rant but I just wish everyone would wake up and see what's really happening before our eyes. The few democratic "leaders" in DC are not helping either, meanwhile republicans are using THAT against us. I wish this country wasn't so extremely polarized I really do, fact is that it IS and not in our favor!

Do you think we can really win this fight with love and tolerance, especially when the rethugs just use it against us to further their support? Has anything ever been won in this country w/o fighting for it?

The internet allows for an anonymity not afforded in real life. There are few rules and consequences on the net which leads to some people behaving poorly.

I personally do not like it when the Mods delete posts. I think everyone should be able to read all of a person's post so they can judge the value of their statements.

It does not take long to determine who the few are that are agitators and offer little in the way of discussion and incite.

That being said, I think they have every right to post and should not be alerted on. I still believe in free speech. One of the great things about the net is that I can choose to ignore anything I wish.

Free speech always works in the favor of the 'good guys', because all free speech can be used as evidence.

If you go to some of the more toxic boards, you'll see that mass deletions occur when people are exposed for who they really are. At the very least, we don't have it as bad on DU.

What drew me to DU in the first place was that the people here were very knowledgeable. There was a wealth of information on the board - about history, about political personalities and factions. People just haven't been posting enough information.

I don't see as much of it these days - the arguing has become a distraction.

however, we have to take responsibility for the tone we take with others before we sling arrows at others for something that we might, ourselves, be contributing to.

Once we individually begin to reflect upon our choice of words (are we being rude? sarcastic? snide and/or dismissive?)... then things will change - but if we only see that behavior in the posts of others - and then feel justified in responding in the same way that we feel we are being responded to ... then we - in that moment - are perpetuating the reaction cycle that keeps the tone going.
